3-Week Itinerary in Sri Lanka with Two Kids

Hi everyone,

We’re heading to Sri Lanka for three weeks in July with two kids (ages 6 and 13). We’ve drafted a rough itinerary but would love to hear from those who’ve already been there 😊 Of course, we want to see everything, but we have to make choices—even though three weeks on the ground lets us do quite a bit. We originally planned a schedule that felt too packed, so we had to cut one stop. We decided to skip Tangalle, even though we were really tempted. The monsoon won’t let us swim there, and the weather in the south is too uncertain, so we preferred to keep our stops on the east coast. Plus, we don’t think it’s reasonable to cut nights from other places. We’ve added a stop in Batticaloa, which we think will be a nice break between Arugam Bay and Sigiriya. What do you think? We’re also debating between Batticaloa and Passikudah. Does the itinerary seem logical to you?

Three weeks is great—you’ll really get to enjoy your trip.

I lived in Sri Lanka for over five years, so I know the country pretty well. Here are a few tips and recommendations for you.

1) I wouldn’t recommend spending your first night in Negombo. The city itself isn’t very nice, and the beaches are quite dirty. Galle is only two hours away by highway and is much more pleasant.

2) I love Galle, but there isn’t a ton to do there. Stay for two nights, then head toward Polhena. Even in summer, some beaches are accessible, and you can swim with turtles. From there, you can visit Udawalawe National Park for a safari the next day.

3) Batticaloa or Passikudah? They offer two very different vibes. Batti is more authentic and off the beaten path, with fewer tourist facilities. Passikudah is more "developed," with nice resorts. It really depends on what you’re looking for.

Other than adding a night in Sigiriya, I wouldn’t change much. Your itinerary is well-balanced and logical.

That said, you didn’t mention any other safaris—are you planning one in the Cultural Triangle? Or maybe the one in Wilpattu?

Polhena, I admit I hadn’t thought of it. I’d been focused on Tangalle. I thought the ocean was too rough in summer to hope to swim along the entire south coast. I’ll look into it now!

We’ll choose Batticaloa over Passikudah.

We’re doing the Udawalawe safari, so I didn’t think it was necessary to add a second one in the center of the country. I’ll take a closer look at Wilpattu!

I don’t have much to add. Your itinerary seems well thought out. I agree about Negombo and Galle—it’s better!

We really enjoyed our little stay near Tangalle. It’s a very peaceful spot, but that was in winter. Still, don’t feel too bad—swimming is impossible there no matter the season; it’s too dangerous. Trincomalee is nice too.

As for safaris, we were pretty disappointed, especially since we’re familiar with East African parks and reserves.

Thanks for your feedback, Herodotos! We’ve never been on a safari before, so we won’t have any point of comparison. We don’t have any particular expectations other than the kids being able to see elephants! We’ll fine-tune the itinerary—we can’t wait to be there!

While I agree that Negombo isn’t very interesting, traveling all the way down to Galle can be tiring with kids—especially depending on what time you arrive at the airport. We went down to Bentota instead, and it was at night. That really stressed my daughter out because, with the power cuts, she found the architecture so different from home overwhelming! With the fatigue, she imagined all sorts of things (she was only 9!). In Bentota, which was just a stop for the night, we visited a turtle conservation center where they help the little ones get back to the sea! It was really nice. I don’t know if it’s still there. After that, we headed to Matara (we like picking less touristy spots!). For safaris, you can check out my blog for a review of Wilpattu Safari, which was supposed to be off the beaten path (we didn’t try Uduwalale), and yet we still ran into a big group of French people... Just my two cents to give you time to think it over. Since we went in winter, we didn’t explore the east coast, but you can find other parents’ experiences on my site
