Northern Vietnam by motorbike in January 2026: tips and riding partner?

In January 2026, I’m planning a motorbike trip through northern Vietnam for 3–4 weeks.

Must-dos: Hanoi, RC4, Dien Bien Phu, and of course the must-see landscapes.

I’m looking for any great tips, ideas… and maybe even a riding partner.

Thanks for your info—you’re definitely speaking from experience. Online, people are more optimistic, so now you’ve got me doubting. My route is RC4 / border road near the Chinese frontier / DBP. I’ve read it’s cold (10°C), and while we’re out of the rainy season, the mountains are another story... This trip really means a lot to me, so I could shift my dates—March/April would probably be better...

Hi there, Definitely adjust your dates without hesitation—you can bundle up against the cold, but mist and fog really ruin the views from the hilltops at DBP, the other PAs, and understanding the topography of this historic site. Same goes for Route Coloniale 4, especially if you take the detour to Coc Xa, which was so famous in 1950. The road along the Chinese border has improved over the past few years but still sees little traffic. Grab a book on RC4 and mark the different posts on a map—there were so many heroic battles, it’d be a shame to miss them. Sometimes you’ll meet veterans or their sons who’ll talk about those battles. I even chatted with some who fought on our side—they’re wary of translators who might be too communist-leaning, but after a few glasses of rice wine, tongues start to loosen... Safe travels!

Hi there, The two times I set off from Đông Khê to reach the end of the Coc Xa basin, the first part could be done by vehicle and the rest on foot (this was 6 years ago). There are still houses where you can stay, and the children of the former occupants share their parents' experiences during the disaster. They're used to visits from "memory tourism" enthusiasts. The famous cliffs are impressive, and the advance was made at night in 1950. I haven't yet taken the Charton column route from where it left Route Coloniale 4 to rescue the Lepage column and then reach Lạng Hải. Maybe next time! If you do it, I hope to read your story. Hi there. I’m currently (since early April) exploring the north by motorbike—Hanoi, Sapa, doing the Ha Giang loop, then heading to Dien Bien Phu.

Looking back, I’d have been smarter to spend more time in Hanoi before heading to Dien Bien Phu, then going back up to the Ha Giang loop and finishing in Sapa. The first two weeks are still pretty foggy and cold in Sapa. Temperatures are starting to rise now.

Make sure you get an international motorbike license—the police 👮 are having a field day.

PS) Buy a paper road map in France. You won’t find any here.

I’ve changed my dates because of the weather—I’ll be leaving in mid-April instead.

Since I’ve ridden a motorbike in the south and seen how the locals drive, is it just as "intense" in the north?

I’ll be in the area from April 20 to June 10, traveling between Sapa, Hanoi, Hue, Hoi An, and back to Hanoi with my partner. If our paths cross, I’d love to buy you a beer! Otherwise, let me know how your trip goes when you’re back.

Riding a motorbike is the same from south to north. It's faster and more dynamic than in Thailand, but without the smiles.

The real danger comes from buses, trucks, and of course, cars. Not to mention the horns, but hey, you get used to all of that pretty quickly.

You’ve gotta leave yourself some room to improvise.

On the road between Vientiane and the Chinese border in Laos, it's packed with Chinese trucks, dust, broken roads, and giant potholes.

The roads in Vietnam are actually pretty manageable (except for landslides and torrential rain). You just gotta get used to the traffic and the non-existent rules—basically, just respect the bigger vehicles.

January is a fantastic time to do the Ha Giang Loop. At this time of year, the region is full of flowers, and it's also Tet, the Vietnamese New Year. From my research, it doesn’t rain in January anymore. Wishing you an amazing trip and a great exploration of northern Vietnam!
