4-week trip to Sulawesi: which agency should I choose?

Hello, In August 2025, I’d like to take a 4-week trip with my husband to Sulawesi Island, from south to north, off the beaten path. I’ve spotted two agencies that offer a tour matching my expectations: Altaï Indonesia and Azimuth Adventure Travel Ltd. Which one would you recommend? Thanks in advance. Laurence

Hi, In my opinion, if you're looking for "off the beaten path" in Sulawesi, it's best to avoid agencies that take crowds of tourists to the same places all the time.🙁

You're right. Unfortunately, I don’t have the time to organize this 4-week trip to Sulawesi myself. So, I’ve gone with a local travel agency that offers custom adventure-hiking tours, more or less "off the beaten path." I ruled out Bali, Java, or the Lesser Sunda Islands because they’re too touristy.

So, have you heard of Altaï or Azimuth?

If there’s one place you shouldn’t miss, it’s the Toraja region from Rantepao (overnight bus from Ujung Pandang). Once there, it’s pretty easy to organize day hikes or 2/3-day treks—otherwise, you’ll find guides no problem. Plus, there are tons of villages and sites to see (taxis, bemos, etc.). Another interesting area: Lore Lindu National Park north of Palu. There are definitely guides or agencies in Palu.

Thanks Djalma, The two agencies I’ve spotted cover Toja country, and one of them also covers Lore Lindu Park. I don’t have any time at all to organize the trip myself, so I’ll use a local agency.

If you love the sea, beaches, and coral reefs in a bit of a remote location, head to the Togian Islands: Malenge Island (for example) – you really don’t need an agency to get there!

No electricity (just a generator), no Wi-Fi... rustic bungalows with full board (at a low price) right by stunning beaches... corals, turtles, sharks... a jellyfish lake... far from mass tourism! Departure from Ampana with a stop in Wakai. Badjo villages on stilts...

The Togian Islands are included in both itineraries. On the other hand, have you heard about the beaches near Pulisan and Bunaken Island by Manado?
