Safe spot for camper/RV near Hidroelectrica before Machu Picchu

Hi everyone, Apart from the road between Cusco and Hidroelectrica—which is tricky but doable—is there a safe place (like a campsite?) to sleep at Hidroelectrica and visit Machu Picchu the next day? Thanks!

hi, a question: why explore Machu Picchu in a camper van? There are few roads since the terrain is very mountainous and rugged. The Machu Picchu area can only be explored on foot. That’s why there’s the Inca Trail. Also, Aguascalientes, the base village for Machu Picchu, is only accessible by train. So if you want to drive a camper van, you’ll be very limited in your movements. However, the solution is to leave your vehicle at the hydroelectric station and take the train to Aguascalientes

That was my question. Is there a campsite or a safe spot at the hydroelectric station to catch the train afterward? Thanks

No, not in Cusco because we have a pet with us and it’d be too long to leave them alone in our vehicle...

Yes, 3 nights total. We spent one night in Aguas Calientes.

One night before and after the visit. A night in Aguas Calientes for the visit. Walk from Hydroelectrica to Aguas Calientes by following the railway line—pleasant stroll.

Hi I just did the bus ride this afternoon to Hidroelectrica at the bus stop... On a patch of "grass" next to a "resto," there was a 4x4 and a campervan with French plates parked nearby, ready to sleep I think... Place seems quiet.. Plan for 2.5 to 3 hours on foot along the trail to reach Aguas Calientes..

That said, I hope you’ve got a tough campervan... The road from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes is quite the adventure—at first it’s okay, you climb up to 4,300m (bring some coca leaves) in the mist with lots of twists and turns, but the road’s decent (about 3 hours). Then the last hour turns into a rough track... Think sheer drops, potholes, mud, rocks, and boulders. You’ll also pass a ton of construction vehicles thanks to the future "Machu Picchu" tunnel—so it’s up to you if you wanna risk it.

Anyway, adventure is adventure!!

Most of the time, you can get through by car to Santa Teresa without any issues. The track can get pretty messy during the rainy season between January and March...
