Feedback on Cambodia Itinerary

Totochan · 2025-02-15

Hi there, I’m planning an itinerary and would love some feedback on whether it’s doable and if the number of days per destination is enough—or too much. I was also debating whether to add an extra night on an island or spend an extra night in Kampot to visit Kep or Battambang.

March 23: Arrival in Phnom Penh in the morning March 24: Phnom Penh March 25: Phnom Penh March 26: Depart for Kampot March 27: Kampot March 28: Depart for Battambang March 29: Battambang March 30: Tonlé SAP to Siem Reap March 31: Siem Reap April 1: Siem Reap April 2: Siem Reap April 3: Siem Reap April 4: Siem Reap April 5: Departure

Thanks for any suggestions or help!

Hi Carole,

Your itinerary looks good since you’re not trying to cram too much in during the time you have—it won’t be a rush.

- Not sure if the water levels of the Tonle Sap and the river leading to it will be high enough by late March for boats to run from Battambang to Siem Reap, but there are buses. - 6 nights in Siem Reap: I’d take one night off and add it to Kampot—not to spend the day in Kep, but to explore the Kampot area by tuk-tuk and for a day or half-day on the rural Fish Island peninsula, which is easy to reach by bike or motorbike.

Thanks for the info! I’d love to visit a floating village and Tonlé SAP, even if it’s the dry season instead of taking the Battambang/Siem Reap trip on the Tonlé SAP. I saw Kampong Khleang village, which seemed more authentic compared to other villages closer to Siem Reap?

I don’t know—I’m not aware of any floating village on this side of the river. I didn’t go because, when you think about it, visiting Angkor is pretty tiring, so I broke up my 3 days among the ruins with a "rest" day where I didn’t leave the city. It was only during my second trip, when I had just one overnight layover in Siem Reap before taking the boat to Battambang, that the boat made an unexpected half-hour stop. That was my only chance to see a floating village—this one was on the west bank. There are so many visitors in Siem Reap that I think if the village you’re talking about isn’t touristy yet, it won’t be long. The fact that its name is already known (you write "I saw"...) is a sign... So don’t hesitate to visit it now—sooner is probably better.

Hi there, I know Siem Reap well—I’ve been there about ten times—and if you want to visit the floating villages, no problem: just head to the dock, which is really well set up now, and rent a boat for the day. Besides Kampong Khleang, there’s another very interesting village called Chong Khneas. If you’re planning to spend an extra day in Kampot, head to Sihanoukville and take a boat to one of the offshore islands. I’d recommend spending the day relaxing on Koh Rong—you’ll get to unwind on a beautiful sandy beach that’s still not too crowded. Have a great trip! Bernard

Hey, I live in Bangkok so Cambodia is kinda my backyard—I go there 3-4 times a year.

Okay, so for the itinerary, it depends on how much time you’ve got, but I’ll give you what I usually recommend to my buddies passing through Bangkok.

Siem Reap (3-4 days minimum) It’s a must. The 3-day pass for Angkor is 62 € and honestly, it’s worth every cent. First day, do the small circuit (Angkor Wat at sunrise—get there around 5:15 AM, Bayon, Ta Prohm). Second day, the big circuit. And if you’ve got a third day, Banteay Srei is 40 minutes by tuk-tuk—it’s less famous but personally, it’s my favorite temple.

For tuk-tuks there, budget 12-15 € a day. Eat at the Old Market, not on Pub Street (tourist trap, everything’s 2x the price).

Phnom Penh (2-3 days) It’s not the most exciting city in the world, but the Genocide Museum and S-21 are something you should see once. For vibes, the Mekong riverside at night is nice. And the food... fish amok for 2-3 € at small restaurants—it’s one of the best dishes I’ve had in Southeast Asia.

Kampot / Kep (2-3 days) Often left off itineraries, and that’s a shame. Kampot’s super chill—rent a scooter for 5 €/day, cruise around the pepper plantations, eat pepper crab in Kep for like 6-7 €. Oh, and the sunset from Bokor Mountain... yeah.

Transport from Bangkok Easiest option: direct flight Bangkok-Siem Reap, AirAsia, between 40 and 80 € depending on when you book. Otherwise, there’s the bus from Mo Chit in Bangkok, 8-9 hours for 20-25 €. It’s long, but hey, it’s an experience. The Cambodian e-visa takes 3 days online, 30 €—do it before you leave so you don’t waste time at the border.

When are you heading out, by the way?

Hi there Sorry to butt in on this discussion—I’m heading back to Thailand with a friend at the start of July 2026 and we’d like to visit Angkor. Flying is way too expensive, and someone told me we can no longer travel overland from Thailand to Cambodia. Can you confirm this?! Thanks in advance

FloAsie, who supposedly lives in BKK since 2019 and goes to Cambodia "a bit like their backyard" 3-4 times a year, but in April 2026 doesn’t know that the land borders between the two countries have been closed since May 2025...

The land and maritime borders between Thailand and Cambodia have been closed until further notice since June 2025. There were clashes at the end of July 2025 and again in December in several areas along the border. Currently, a ceasefire has been holding for five and a half months, but the Thai occupation of several Cambodian villages on Cambodian territory continues to fuel tensions, especially since the Thai Prime Minister refuses to resolve the dispute through international bodies.

That said, both countries are completely safe outside the border zone, and there’s no issue for travelers who want to explore the region (except along the border, of course).

To reach Cambodia, you’ll need to fly from Bangkok or another Southeast Asian airport (Singapore, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Kuala Lumpur), East Asia (several Chinese cities, Seoul as well), or the Middle East, or enter via the land borders with Laos or Vietnam.

You can find cheap tickets for Bangkok - Siem Reap or Bangkok - Phnom Penh with the low-cost airline Air Asia.
