A week in the Algarve (Portugal): Faro and Lagos, good choice?

Blacksab · 2025-02-25

Hi everyone,

We’re thinking of spending a week in the Algarve in April or May.

I was planning to stay 3 days in Faro and 4 days in Lagos, and explore the surrounding areas. Do you think that’s a good idea?

All tips and advice are welcome.

Thanks

Hi Bernard, I’d give you a very Norman answer: neither one nor the other, but somewhere in the middle. I didn’t like Faro—it’s too big, not very clean, and really crowded. Lagos is much prettier, but it’s at the far end of the Algarve. My personal favorite is Portimão—it’s got a good mix of touristy and local vibes. Just a heads-up: in April or May, don’t expect to swim unless you love *very* cold water! 😉

thanks Haut Savoyard,

I’ll check out Portimão.

I kinda figured about the water temperature. Anyway, I need water that’s at least 28°C

Thanks Haut Savoyard, I’ll check out Portimão. I kinda suspected the water temp would be like that. Anyway, I need water at least 28°C

Oh well, if you get half of that, it’ll be awesome on this side of the Atlantic! 😎 But aside from the water temp, the area is gorgeous—you’re gonna love it!
