Where to stay between Tarifa and Cadiz for hiking along the beaches?

Hi there! We’re heading to Andalusia for a week in early April. We’ll spend 3 days in Seville and 1 day in Córdoba. After that, we’d like to rent a car for the remaining 3 days to explore the Costa de la Luz.

We’d love to do some great hikes along the beaches between Tarifa and Cadiz and visit Cadiz itself. Is 3 full days enough to do this? Is it better to stay in Cadiz and explore the area from there, or should we move around to different villages? Do you have any hiking suggestions? We’ve spotted some hikes in Barbate, Trafalgar Beach, and Bolonia.

Since there are 100 km between Cadiz and Tarifa, I’d pick a place to stay somewhere in between, closer to the hikes you’ve already scoped out (Barbate, Trafalgar). I was there in February 2024, and I see three towns that could work: Conil de la Frontera, Barbate, and Vejer de la Frontera. The first two are right by the sea, while Vejer is about ten km inland. Having visited all three, two are beach resorts and one is a small town with way more character—and the visit itself is interesting. I’d go with Vejer de la Frontera.

As for Cadiz, I’m not sure what to think about going there. I’ve heard driving in can be tricky, but I haven’t tried it myself. I took a boat from El Puerto de Santa Maria.

I haven’t booked a car yet—I was trying to see if we could get around by train/bus to avoid the hassle of parking, but I think we’ll have more freedom with a car... Vejer seems like a good base; I’ll start looking for accommodation. Is parking easy or as complicated as in Cadiz?

If you have any hiking suggestions or tips, I’d love to hear them!

Initially, I also considered Doñana National Park, but it seems like it might be too much given the little time we have. In case you know that area? The stretch between Cadiz and Tarifa looks stunning—we’ll have to make some tough choices!

I’m adding to my previous post with the hikes I did between Tarifa and Cádiz (from south to north).

1- Bolonia. We visited the archaeological site (Baelo Claudia) but didn’t do the hike.



Photo taken on February 13, 2024. The hike starts from the beach, climbs or goes around the dune (not framed at the far end of the beach on the right), then heads to the visible cape.

2- Barbate. Hike to Torre del Tajo. The starting point is above Barbate (parking by the roadside). Pine forest and high cliffs. You reach the tower. You can continue further for a view of Cape Trafalgar from the top of the cliffs. We did this hike in bad weather.

3- Cape Trafalgar. Start from the road at the entrance to Caños de Meca. Here, the coast is low and sandy. The lighthouse is on a rock that’s no more than 10 m high (the rock itself).

4- Conil de la Frontera. From Conil to the port of Conil. Start from Fuente del Gallo beach (this avoids the urbanized section between the center of Conil and this beach). Follow the trail along the top of the cliffs toward the port of Conil.



You can see the port and the lighthouse in the distance. I’ve rarely seen the sea with a color so close to the land it erodes at the foot of the cliffs. This coastline must be receding very quickly due to the sea’s action.

5- Conil de la Frontera. Start from the lighthouse (Cabo Roche) and follow the top of the cliffs to Roche. In some places, there are stairs allowing you to descend from the top of the cliff to small coves. I didn’t go down given the hiking conditions. This section is just north of hike 4.

That’s more than you’ll have time to do, in my opinion. You’ll need to make some choices.

Regarding your other questions: - I think getting around this area without a car is a hassle. - Parking in Vejer. Since I was there in February, I didn’t even think about the issue. Anyway, between Vejer and Cádiz, the ratio is about 1 to 10 in terms of population (roughly 10,000 in Vejer, 100,000 in Cádiz).
