Caribbean or Pacific coast? (Costa Rica)

Hi there, we're looking into Costa Rica for a short trip in July (10 days).

From what we've read here and there: - Most travelers head to the Pacific coast. - For a July trip, the Caribbean coast is less prone to heavy rains.

Is that correct?

Question: When it comes to beaches, parks, and driving distances, is the Caribbean coast worth it compared to the Pacific coast?

Especially for the beaches—I’ve seen tons of blogs and sites with photos of Caribbean beaches vs. Pacific ones, and it seems like the Pacific side is way more paradise-like. Is that accurate? (It looks like, regardless of season or weather, the sea on the Caribbean side is darker and choppier.)

Thanks in advance if anyone can share their experience (Caribbean vs. Pacific, pros, cons, etc.)

Hi there, 10 days is short, so it’s pretty smart to focus on just one side. But which one? We spent a month in CR in January 2023, so I won’t be much help with the weather in July. But it’s clear there’s more rain on the Caribbean side.

The general impression is that the Pacific coast is much more structured, developed, and—of course—way more touristy than the Caribbean side (we only visited the south). Our host in Cahuita told us: "Pacific for Americans, Caribbean for the French."

Puerto Viejo, Cahuita, and Manzanillo still feel raw and untouched. From Jacó to Uvita, you can really tell the hospitality is tailored for Americans (80% of tourists in CR).

For 10 days, I’d go with the Pacific side (the beaches are still stunning) and make a detour to Bahía Drake for that "end-of-the-world" vibe you’d miss otherwise.
