Visiting Yala Park (Sri Lanka)
Sevi27 · 2025-03-22
Hi there,
We’re planning to visit Yala Park for half a day.
Could anyone tell me which block is the most interesting to visit, given that we’re coming from Tangalle?
Thanks for your reply.

Hi Séverine,
So Block 1 is the most famous, but depending on the time of year (and the weekend), it can get really crowded!
Lunugamvehera is much less busy, but travelers say you see slightly fewer animals there (though the landscapes are apparently still stunning).
You also have Bundala nearby, but that’s more for bird-watching safaris.
You can find info on all the Yala blocks here 😊
And if you want to explore the town of Tissa, the starting point for safaris, there are some off-the-beaten-path tips in the shared article for things to do.
Have a great day!
Caroline

Hello 😊
If you're coming from Tangalle for a half-day visit to Yala, Block 1 is the most easily accessible and also the most popular. This is where you’ll have the best chance of spotting leopards, as well as elephants, crocodiles, peacocks, and plenty of birds. It can get crowded, but it’s still the best choice for a first-time visitor, especially if you’re short on time.
👍 Tip: Leave early in the morning (around 4:30–5 a.m.) to avoid the heat and enjoy the relative calm of the park!
If you want a more relaxed and personalized experience, you can also contact a local agency like Shanti Travel, which organizes safaris with a French-speaking driver-guide tailored to your preferences:
