Chile in May: weather at southern sites (Lake District and Patagonia)

Hi there, I’m heading to Chile for 3 weeks starting May 1st.

I can’t seem to find reliable info about the weather in May in the southern areas (Lake District and Patagonia).

Do you think some sites are still doable without too much rain at that time?

Hi,

As for rain, in May it's okay—it doesn't rain too much. However, it's cold. I was there in March, and it was around 15°C in the north and around 10°C in southern Patagonia. The climate in these two regions is quite different.

In the Lake District, during May, there’s a 99.99% chance you’ll see some rain. It’s one of the wettest regions in Chile, and in autumn, you’ll almost certainly have several rainy days. Statistically, January is the driest month, while July is the wettest. In May, Puerto Montt averages around 200 mm of rainfall, and Valdivia gets even more.

In Patagonia, around Punta Arenas and Puerto Natales, rainfall is significantly less than in the Lake District, but the days are shorter—especially given the extreme latitudes. It’s also colder, with a lot of wind.

A rain jacket is definitely a must during this time!
