Experience with e-assist on recumbent bikes

Guilaumus · 2025-03-24

hi,

so glad the site’s open for discussion again...

I’m planning a trip on a recumbent bike. Has anyone here tried recumbents with e-assist? I went for this option because climbing mountains is tough without a boost—probably going with a mid-drive motor.

Also, anyone up for joining a stretch of the route heading toward Greece at the end of 2025?

welcome

Hi there,

I travel a lot by recumbent bike (my profile photo is a bit old) often in the mountains and without assistance, with small gears it climbs slowly but you eventually make it to the top of the pass. For recumbent biking, you need to ride and build the right muscles to fully enjoy it. If you haven’t already, you can sign up on the Vélorizontal forum—you’ll find all the info you’re looking for there.

Thanks Cesax, Okay, I’ll check out your link. Good for you if you can ride without e-assist; I tried, but there’s at least an 18% grade starting from my place, and any bike would guarantee I’d never come back. Even car drivers get scared! !
