Taxis on Java Island

Hi there, we’ve planned our itinerary, but how does it work on the ground for getting a taxi? For example, we want to go to Borobudur Temple for sunrise—how do we get a taxi that early? Same question for other cities—is there a website to contact a taxi? We don’t want organized tours. We’re used to renting a car, but we’re a bit lost here... Thanks so much for your help!

Call the taxi companies the day before. Taksi Pataga at 384 384 or Taksi Vetri at 563 551—you’ll see what they say about the super-early hour. Alternatively, ask your hotel owner to arrange it for you. But I still think the best option would be to stay overnight near Borobudur itself.

For Borobudur, I stayed at the hotel right by the site entrance. Perfect for sunrise visits. There’ll still be people, but it’s way more manageable than the daytime crowds.

For transport, I always arranged it the day before by asking the hotels.

But that was a while ago.

Nowadays, I’d use the local Uber equivalents—Grab or Gojek.

I used Grab in Thailand—flawless.

Otherwise, we rented a car in Bali. Not impossible if you’re careful and have a GPS.

I recommend Maxim An online app for cars and motorbikes. Much cheaper than Gojek and Grab, which you can also use. However, you’ll need internet for the return trip to Jogjakarta. Another option is to hire a vehicle with a driver for the day—it costs between 500,000 and 600,000 IDR. All hotels offer this

You can always find a taxi by asking your accommodation. However, I also recommend spending the night near the temples and, most importantly, registering several days in advance on the booking site so you can enter at the time you’ve chosen. There’s a daily and hourly visitor quota.....
