Renting a scooter in Bali

Hi there.

I’m planning to visit Bali at the end of September. I’d love to hear your tips on renting a scooter.

Is it possible to explore the island just using this mode of transport? Are gas stations easy to find? Do I need an international license? (It takes a long time to get one, and I don’t have it yet.) I’ll be staying in Ubud. Any rental places you’d recommend?

Thanks so much!!!

Hi there,

Late September is a great time to visit Bali. Yes, scooter rentals are available everywhere, but an international driver’s permit is now mandatory in addition to your national license to ride. You’ll need to have both ready to show if you’re stopped. If you order your international permit online, I think a digital PDF version is sufficient. Double-check before you go... If you stay in Ubud, you can explore the surrounding areas in a star pattern. But from east to west, the island is nearly 150 km wide! Be careful on the roads!

In Ubud, I stayed at Ben's Homestay. It was really nice. Otherwise, you’ll find plenty of options—the supply is generous.
