From Mostar to Clermont-Ferrand: 3-day, 2-night road trip ideas (by car)

My summer trip between France and Montenegro is pretty much set.

Now I just need to plan the return route from Mostar.

On the way there, I took the Mont Blanc Tunnel, drove through Italy to Trieste, a small part of Slovenia, and then the Croatian coast.

For the return trip, I’d like to mix things up and avoid the Croatian coast.

So far, I’m thinking of stopping in Rastoke, Croatia, and then Milan, Italy.

Any other suggestions?

Why Mont Blanc and not Fréjus?

I didn’t quite get what you’re looking for. An alternative stop that’s not Milan but still nearby? Novara.

Actually, I’m looking for stopover ideas between Mostar and the Auvergne without always taking the same routes.

Crossing Italy seems pretty much unavoidable for the shorter version.

So, I’m thinking of two stopover cities: one in Croatia, and the other in Italy.

Towns or medium-sized cities that aren’t too ugly.

Novara.

I was considering that city. Is it nice for a pre-dinner stroll and a digestif afterward?

I’d prefer a place without ZTLs so I don’t have to rack my brain after a long day of driving.

Why Mont Blanc instead of Fréjus?

I’ve already taken the Fréjus pass many times, but not the Mont Blanc tunnel in over 40 years !😉

On the way back, I could go through Fréjus or the Petit Saint Bernard pass.

Yes, it’s pleasant. It’s already Piedmont. You eat and drink very well there. Normally, if you have a hotel in the ZTL, you can drive in with your car.

If you want something more rural, just before Milan, there’s Trezzo sull’Adda, with a walk to Crespi or along the Adda riverbanks.

About the tunnel, okay, but I don’t really see the point of paying full price for the Aosta Valley highway, which is super expensive.
