Traveling by train from Luang Prabang to Vientiane

hi, we’re planning to take the fast train from Luang Prabang to Vientiane. Is it true that aerosol sprays like Insect-Ecran are confiscated before boarding the train? Do we need Malarone for the area around Luang Prabang? We’re really looking forward to discovering this beautiful country. We’ll also take the chance to visit an elephant protection center. All aerosols are theoretically banned and confiscated. Some reports suggest that enforcement may be less strict if the passenger’s final destination isn’t China.

Since the station is far from Luang Prabang’s city center and baggage checks can take "a while," plan to leave your accommodation about 1.5 hours before the train departs.

As for Malarone, I’ve never taken it in Laos and don’t think I’m the only one.

Hi there! Aerosols, lighters, and knives (forget your Opinel!) are indeed prohibited, and checks are frequent. It’s a Chinese-run train managed by Chinese staff.

We took Malarone, but didn’t encounter a single mosquito in January.

Watch out for elephant conservation centers in LP. Some quickly claim the title without truly fulfilling the role.

If you have time, don’t hesitate to head north from LP to Nong Khiaw and Muang Ngoi—it’s stunning!

All bags and suitcases are inspected by Chinese employees who don’t speak English, and there’s no point arguing with them... leave behind any prohibited items, and if you have an e-cigarette, expect an extra fine! Since I was traveling with a Swiss Army knife, I ended up taking the plane instead!

hi, make sure to book the train early enough, otherwise you’ll get stuck. Yes, all flammable or sharp objects are prohibited. After taking the "popular" train from Boten to Vientiane, my mosquito repellent got through (no aerosol, just a pump bottle). But it was the end of my trip, so I gave it a try—for the outbound trip, I hadn’t taken the train for that reason.
