Self-sufficient road trip in Oman with a rooftop tent

Mathildelps · 2025-04-28

Hi there, my partner and I did a road trip in Oman in January 2025 with a 4x4 and a rooftop tent. We only slept in free spots out in nature. It’s essential to have a 4x4 to experience this. The *Oman Off Road* book was a huge help—we bought it locally. I’ve written up our whole adventure and shared all our tips on my blog, including GPS coordinates to help you find campsites or even cross the desert on your own. Self-sufficient 4x4 trip in Oman with a rooftop tent

A huge thank you for sharing your experience—it really makes me want to follow in your footsteps in Oman! A road trip in a 4x4 with wild camping is exactly what I’m looking to organize for next January. Reading your account totally confirms this choice for me.

You made the right call sticking to spots in the middle of nature. That’s exactly what I imagine as the most immersive way to enjoy Oman’s stunning landscapes, whether in the wadis, along the mountains, or in the desert. Having total autonomy changes everything, and I completely agree with you: a good 4x4 is essential.

By the way, I’m prepping my own vehicle with a rooftop tent from Nompads, and your post reassures me so much. Their gear is top-notch for comfort and quick setup, and I went for a model with an integrated mattress—perfect for sleeping under the stars without any hassle. I think this kind of setup is ideal for a road trip like yours: total freedom, safety, and waking up to incredible views.

Thanks also for the tip about the *Oman Off-Road* guide—I’ll definitely pick it up there like you did. And your blog is an absolute gem! I’ve started reading it and love how you share your stops with super useful GPS coordinates. You can really tell you’re all about helping other travelers—it’s so generous of you.

Quick logistical question: Did you use a solar shower or any particular water system? And how did you handle restocking provisions and fuel in more remote areas? That’d help me plan ahead.

Thanks again for sharing. And for anyone reading this thread, I highly recommend combining the paper guide, this blog, and a well-thought-out rooftop tent (like Nompads’) to experience Oman to the fullest and in complete autonomy.

Looking forward to reading about your next adventure! 🌍

A big thank you for your feedback. In the gear provided with our 4x4 rental, there was a solar shower (basic one to hang up high, and it was really handy). As for supplies and fuel, there’s always plenty along the way—no chance of running out of gas!
