Is it better to visit Martinique or Guadeloupe in April?

hi need some info—I’m torn between Martinique and Guadeloupe for April. also, which island is bigger in terms of trip length? thanks in advance

Hi, Are you talking about April in general, or was that a slip-up (since April 2025 is already ending😉)? Regarding the second part of your question, Guadeloupe is larger than Martinique. Plus, Guadeloupe has dependencies: Marie-Galante, La Désirade, and Les Saintes (Terre-de-Haut and Terre-de-Bas), and you should plan at least a day for each island.

It seems to me that Guadeloupe, made up of Basse-Terre and Grande-Terre, is larger. But Martinique has plenty of advantages too. And you can also hop over to Saint Lucia. That said, the northern part of Martinique offers some great hiking opportunities. I can’t really say much about Guadeloupe since I’ve never been there.

Oh, and just a heads-up—don’t expect to find giant mushrooms there.

Both are worth visiting! We’ve been to both islands and fell in love with Martinique because, for us, it’s been much more welcoming. For several years now, we’ve spent at least two months there. You should definitely visit both islands—maybe one week in Guadeloupe ("Gwada") and another in Martinique, or even longer if you can! Everyone has their own tastes, but both islands are amazing 😊

So for me, the choice isn’t necessarily about how much time you have—you’ll just adapt your visits based on the time available. Even after more than fifteen trips to Guadeloupe, I’m still discovering new things... I love both islands, and I think I can say I know them really well. If you’re a fan of hikes through lush tropical landscapes, both islands have great options, but I’ll admit that lately, I’ve been favoring Guadeloupe because there are some truly magical spots. It’s also true that Guadeloupe has dependencies that are well worth exploring, but you’ll need time to discover them. Some people try to do everything at a fast pace and in one week, they visit Grande-Terre, Basse-Terre, Les Saintes, and Marie-Galante🏴‍☠️

The north of Martinique could be compared to Basse-Terre in Guadeloupe (lush tropical forest), while the south of Martinique is more like Grande-Terre (beaches, turquoise water). Yet they won’t hesitate to go out of their way to help you. In short, in terms of hospitality and friendliness, I think both are equal, but you should be careful not to overinterpret a lack of a smile. In terms of museums and cultural activities, I’d put Martinique ahead of Guadeloupe. On the other hand, on both islands, you’ll face the number one problem: traffic jams. You can avoid them by choosing your accommodation wisely to be going against the flow of traffic, depending on your planned itinerary. Trust me, take this advice seriously!! Also, note that in Guadeloupe, some areas suffer from frequent water outages that can affect tourist accommodations. Make sure to check in advance.

That's true, but Martinique isn't lacking in them either! I loved exploring the northern part between Anse Couleuvre and Grand Rivière! It's stunning! There are also some lovely (and easier) trails in the far south between Les Salines and Cap Chevalier.

For flight tickets, I recommend the Voyage Antillais agency—they’ll give you good rates on Corsair, Air Caraïbes, and Air France for Guadeloupe and Martinique. All my family members who travel regularly between mainland France and the French West Indies use them.

Right now, I’m in Guadeloupe. I booked at the end of November and paid 617 € with two 23 kg bags to fly with Corsair (it was cheaper than the public price without baggage!)

I definitely didn’t have any luck—I flew with Corsair once... 8-hour delay on the way there and 5 hours on the way back! No compensation at all... they offered me a 50 € credit for a future trip! Plus, in the cabin, we were packed in like sardines!
