Climbing Vesuvius from Herculaneum: Do I need to book?

Hi there, I’d like to climb to the top of Vesuvius by taking the bus from Herculaneum. I’ve figured out how to get there, but what I can’t quite work out is whether I *have* to book on their website or if I can just show up without a reservation. Thanks!

Climbs on active volcanoes are often mandatory with guides. So yes, you’ll need to book. It’s a safety issue. Everything is closely monitored and supervised. That’s how it was when I went up Etna several years ago. Plus, you need to be pretty fit and a good hiker, and have the right gear—good hiking shoes and be in shape. The descent into the lava can be quite slippery. But it’s an experience you’ll remember for life. You can check with the Italian tourist office in Paris for details.
