China Passport Validity

Hello, We’re traveling as a family to China this summer, from late July to late August. However, my kids’ passports expire at the end of January 2026, which means they’ll have about 5 months of validity left after our departure. Many travel agencies recommend having more than 6 months of validity! I haven’t found any official information about this requirement. As a precaution, the best thing would be to renew them, but before I realized this, I bought domestic flight tickets using their current passport numbers. I’m worried these tickets might no longer be valid... Thanks for your help if you have any info on this topic.

It’s pretty unusual to provide a passport number when purchasing tickets, and in any case, I’ve never heard of it being impossible to change it afterward. Where did you buy the tickets? Which airline?

It’s best to have at least 6 months left on your passport after leaving China. The airline can refuse boarding at departure—they’re responsible if you’re denied entry on arrival and must fly you back to France at their own expense. You’ve got time to renew it, so don’t wait!

No stress—just renew the passports and update the number before your flight. The passport number isn’t as critical as names and first names. You can change it anytime, and it’s not even mandatory when buying the ticket. It’s just an extra convenience they offer, like choosing your seat.

Hi there, I managed to get some info from the Shanghai International Affairs office, and they told me that China doesn’t require those 6 months of validity—just 3. I thought this might be useful for others! Thanks again! !

On this topic, I’d personally trust the IATA reference sites of the airlines the most.

I’m not sure where you looked, but here’s what I found:

Travelers need a valid passport to enter China. The traveler's passport must remain valid for at least 6 months after the traveler arrives in China. The passport must have at least 2 blank pages.

This isn't "my site" Sherpa. It's the app used by the SkyTeam alliance. You're right, on the IATA site it says "Passports and other documents accepted for entry must be valid for the period of intended stay."
