Tips for a multi-month trip to Thailand

For flights, how do you book a ticket without knowing the exact return date? And for accommodation, what do you recommend—renting from France or once I’m there?

... knowing that once you're in the country, many airlines allow you to change your return date for a fixed modification fee (usually between $100 and $200), and of course, there needs to be availability on the new date you choose (you’re not a priority). You can do this at a travel agency (everywhere) or by contacting the airline’s local office—it’s usually quick. An extra charge may also apply if your new return date is beyond the initial validity of the ticket. For example: your initial ticket is scheduled for a departure on 01/01 and a return on 25/02, so the airline sold you a ticket valid for 2 months at 800 € round trip. Then, during your trip, you change your return date to 15/03, which means you exceed the 2-month validity. For this new duration, the ticket price becomes the one for a 3-month validity, which costs 1000 € round trip. In this case, on top of the fixed modification fees, you’ll have to pay an additional 200 €, corresponding to the difference between 800 € and 1000 €. (each airline has its own pricing and validity rules, so the costs and validities mentioned above are just examples).

You can find accommodations with pools in areas with expats or lots of tourists, like Bangkok, Pattaya, Hua Hin, Samui, Phuket, and maybe Chiang Mai. Other accommodations are available pretty much everywhere in the country.

To avoid risks, never pay remotely. You can easily find agencies online or freelance real estate agents on Facebook.

Currently, no visa is needed for up to 60 days/59 nights in the country, provided that upon arrival you already have a ticket proving you’ll leave the country within the allowed time (return flight or onward ticket to another country). They often check that you meet this condition right at check-in in France before departure.
