What to see in Sweden in 3 days with easy transport outside the city?

Hi everyone, I’m planning to spend about 9 days in Sweden (round trip to Stockholm) in July (without a car, most likely). We’d like to spend 4 or 5 days in Stockholm to really enjoy it. For the rest of the trip, I’m struggling to find good ideas. I’ve seen the Gullmar Fjord or small towns like Kjallbacka or Lysekil, or even the Bohuslän cliffs, but on various travel sites, they don’t mention whether it’s easy to get around, if there are excursions, or what transport options are available. Do you have any suggestions for where to stay for 3 days (outside a big city) with easy transport? Thanks for your help. Dominique

Have you considered Uppsala or Sigtuna?

They’re really beautiful towns that are worth the trip on their own. They’re not big cities like Stockholm, Malmö, or Gothenburg, but they’re charming, and it’s easy to get around from there.

When you say "easy transport," do you mean long distances or short ones?

Hi and thanks for the reply! When I say "getting around easily," I mean having enough public transport—whether buses, boats, etc.—and not too many long distances. I’ll keep the two small towns you mentioned in mind. For a week, I don’t want to stray too far from Stockholm because I’d rather enjoy the places I visit than spread myself too thin, see very little in the end, and waste a lot of time on transport. While planning my trip, I’m thinking of spending several days in Stockholm and then maybe one or two islands in the archipelago (Vaxholm, Rindö, Grinda...) and staying there. If you have any tips or ideas, I’d love to hear them! Thanks, Dominique

Well, the two cities I mentioned are perfect: they're just an hour from Stockholm and well connected. You can easily explore the area while still enjoying Stockholm.

Hi there, and thanks again! After 4 full days in Stockholm, I’d love to visit one or more islands for 3–4 days. I’ve got a few ideas but also some questions 😉: - Spending a few days on the island of Gotland, staying in Visby? Good idea? - Staying on the island of Vaxholm and taking the boat to visit nearby islands? Easy to do? - Changing islands each day (Rindö, going as far as Sandhamn?) before returning to Stockholm for the last day before my flight the next morning? What’s making you hesitate between these 3 options?

Personally, for more comfort, I’d go with the second option: staying on one of the islands and visiting the others during the day. For a first taste of the Stockholm archipelago, it seems pretty comprehensive! :)

Hi Tyflore (Damien), I’ve been in Stockholm with a friend for a week out of our planned two. We’ve made lots of interesting discoveries. Since you know the city well, I’ll take the liberty of sharing a few observations and questions. We’ve been traveling solo and independently for many years, but we’re finding the transport here quite challenging: no bus maps at the information office, no signs in the streets or at elevators (since Stockholm is on multiple levels!) to direct us to bus lines! And at some stops where our destination is listed, we’ve been told the bus doesn’t actually go there... There’s not always a display of timetables, and just after 8 PM, after waiting and asking for info, we’ve learned there are no more buses! The boats don’t always do the round trip to the terminus either—sometimes as early as 6:30 PM... Do you have any tips for our French logic? And since we’re staying in Nacka, is it possible to do a round trip to Sandhamn in a day? The info office said it’d take 3 or 4 transfers??? Fingers crossed—we still have a week of sightseeing left! 😊 Thanks in advance
