Visiting the Yucatán by train

I'm heading to MEXICO IN NOVEMBER 2025. Since private guides and drivers are really expensive—over 300 € per day—I'm thinking of exploring the Yucatán by train. CAN YOU SHARE ANY INFO ON THIS? Thanks

Hi there, There’s the Tren Maya (Maya Train) railway project. It connects major archaeological sites, cities, and tourist areas across the Yucatan for the most part. It’ll be expanding to other regions in the coming months. It’s been in service since early 2024. I’ve detailed the Maya Train route in the Yucatan here if you’d like more info.

I know this region very well since my wife is from there. The Maya Train isn’t the best option for traveling. The stations are located far from everything, with no transportation available to get from the station to where you need to go. Plus, it’s not very reliable. Recently, a derailment happened due to poor construction quality.

To give you an idea, the entire construction was done in barely 3 years. You can imagine the rest...

I’d recommend taking the bus (ADO) or renting a car.

Why not rent a car? Driving isn’t complicated in Mexico—there’s not much traffic on the roads. You just need to be very careful with the "topes" (speed bumps) of all kinds, which are everywhere in villages and at intersections. We rented one for 14 days for around 25 € per day. Nearly new SUV (Nissan Kicks), no security issues, and no problems with the police. There are lots of checkpoints, but we were never stopped over 2,400 km. It gives you so much flexibility with travel, schedules, lets you go off the beaten path, and saves comfort (luggage) and time.
