Car choice for Kruger National Park

We're heading to KNP for a week next September and rented a Toyota Starlet. In the meantime, I've read reviews about the poor condition of gravel roads and potholes. I'm wondering if I made the right choice with this type of car, risking damage and potentially paying a lot for repairs 🏴‍☠️. What's the point of renting a budget car that's not suited to the somewhat unpredictable road conditions in the Park??

Whereas an SUV, in addition to offering better wildlife visibility, would handle degraded roads better and allow us to take more rugged trails, which are often rich in wildlife-spotting opportunities?? 🙂

What do you mean by KNP?

If you're talking about Kruger, any car will work anywhere.

For spotting certain animals, the height of a big 4x4 might be a plus, but the height of a small SUV won’t make much difference.

If you're talking about Kgalagadi, I went there in a compact car. It’s a bit trickier because of the sand on some tracks. Also, not all of the park is accessible with a 2x4.

Hi there, Just like Mme Attila, I think a small car can get almost anywhere in KNP unless there’s been rain. I’d say rather that: If you consider the surprise potholes, the sometimes sketchy driving in South Africa, the places you’ll go and the routes you’ll take, a SUV would give me more peace of mind. I’ve dealt with Aroundaboutcars several times and been happy with them.

In the end, I switched to a Suzuki SUV with Flexi car.

Hi, In the park, the roads are paved and in good condition. The speed limit is 50 km/h, and it's forbidden to leave the paved roads to go onto a track. So a small rental car is more than enough. Best regards

Not all roads are paved by any means, and there are many dirt tracks open to traffic. These tracks don’t require a 4x4, and any vehicle can use them.

Hi, the best way to see the animals is to settle at a watering hole—they’ll come by all day. No need to drive kilometers in a 4x4 under the scorching sun (hello, pollution!)

You actually don’t need a 4x4, and a watering hole is a great spot.

But that watering hole might be at the end of a dirt track since not all roads in Kruger are paved... A track you can reach in a regular car, though! !
