Which binoculars should we take for safaris?

Sofiroadtrip · 2025-05-25

Hi, We’re heading to South Africa at the end of July, and thanks to your great tips, our itinerary is all set. We still have a few questions, though. For safaris, we’re definitely bringing binoculars, but do you have any advice? I’ve heard that a 10x42 model is the way to go, but prices vary a lot. There are some at Décathlon (Solognac)—do you think they’re worth it? Thanks so much for your tips! Have a great day

Hi there, We have several pairs, and by far the best is a Zeiss Conquest HD 10x42, but it’s a big investment if you’ll only use them this once.

Thanks for the suggestion. But honestly, we’re not looking to spend a big budget on something we’ll only use once. Thanks anyway!

Hi Sophie, We go every year, and yes, binoculars are essential. We have two pairs of Nikon 8x42 and 10x42. They’re great, but the price is a bit steep. If we were to do it again, I’d only take the 8x42 because they’re smaller and lighter. To be honest, the difference between 8x and 10x isn’t worth it.

Last year, a friend bought the 10x42 from Decathlon (Solognac). I thought they were really good, and I’d recommend them. Great value for money.

Happy safari! Agnès
