What to see and do in Northern Laos without hiking?

hi there we’ll arrive in Luang Prabang on November 8th from Bangkok and plan to leave from Vientiane on November 19th. Little question—we’d love to visit northern Laos, but I can’t do mountain walks or climbing. My partner can, though. What do you recommend for us? Thanks for your tips! Best, Monique

Luang Prabang is a city that offers plenty of activities without too much walking. You’ve got the market, the Royal Palace, temples... and of course the "Tak Bat", the monks' alms-giving ritual. Then, on the way to Vientiane, I’d recommend stopping in Vang Vieng. It’s not always in the tourist guides, but it’s a really nice, peaceful, and more authentic town. There are plenty of walks along the river (no need to walk much), just exploring.

Hi, If there’s one town that’s really touristy between Luang Prabang and Vientiane—and that’s featured in all the travel guides—it’s definitely Vang Vieng! Things may have changed, but it used to be the party town! If you're looking for peace and quiet, it’s better to stay a little outside the center...

Vang Vieng from 2000 to 2012 is no longer the Vang Vieng of 2024-2025. The town still has that wild reputation, but these days most of the bars are closed, it's much less touristy, and it’s regained its daytime tranquility—way more peaceful. Of course, it’s still lively in the evenings, like many other towns. The surrounding area has major tourist spots where everyone gathers. The town itself is more of a stopover for sleeping or eating, but I think it’s worth spending a little more time there. Still, you’re right—November is peak season in Laos, so it’ll likely be busier.

I didn’t get a chance to do it, but apparently the hot-air balloon ride is really nice and pretty affordable! 😊

Hi there, You can still head a bit further north in "exploration" mode with some relaxed short walks. I did this a few years ago—I couldn’t hike in the mountains or climb either because I was traveling with my daughter, who was (just shy of) 4 years old. I took the bus from Luang Prabang’s bus station to Nong Khiaw, then the public boat from Nong Khiaw to Muang Ngoi. Easy walks, no steep climbs. We returned partly by kayak (though physically, it was a bit much for me) down the Nam Ou > https://voyageforum.com/forum/deux-semaines-laos-avec-enfant-en-bas-age-mars-2019-d9552325/ I was worried I’d feel super frustrated, but I ended up with amazing memories...

By the way, you only have 11 days in Laos, which is a bit tight to see many places since transport in Laos is slow and long. If you have limited time like you do, plan carefully to avoid spending those days on buses. Luang Prabang deserves a few days with its surroundings (waterfalls, countryside). To go further north, you can take a bus to Nong Khiaw and then Muang Ngoi, like Grange did. These are really beautiful spots, but it takes time to get there and back. You can take an easy walk through rice fields to visit villages.

Alternatively, you could go from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng, which is also very pretty. Stay by the river, explore the valley by motorbike or bike—there are lakes and caves. The town has calmed down a lot since the parties were banned, but the landscapes are still stunning.

Vientiane is also worth at least a day—there are beautiful pagodas.

Northern Laos is stunning, with plenty of hiking opportunities. The new train line makes it easy to reach different parts of the north. Unfortunately, if only your companion can hike, you might find the time dragging. How about you stay and wander around Luang Prabang while they hike in the Luang Namtha area?

Luang Prabang is a touristy but very pleasant city. There are tons of temples, which is why the Tak Bat ceremony is so impressive.

In the area, you should check out Kuang Si Falls (go early—the place gets really popular), and the butterfly park is also really nice. You could also take a trip to Pak Ou Cave.

As for Vang Vieng, while the landscapes are nice, the town has become an open-air party spot with no real appeal. Young people come here to party, walk around in swimsuits, and the place reeks of weed with lots of excesses.

Vientiane is a charming little capital that you can explore in a day.

Having visited Vang Vieng last year, and as mentioned in other posts, the town has really calmed down, and the surrounding areas are definitely worth spending 2 or 3 days max. Especially since the train makes it very easy to get there from Vientiane or Luang Prabang.
