Boat ride on the bayou

We're heading to the US in October and planning to take a boat ride on the bayou. We don’t want to fall into tourist traps with big boats—we’d prefer a more intimate experience. I can manage in French, but I know that’s not always possible. My English isn’t great.

We’re torn between: - Annie Miller's in Houma - Zam's Swamp or Torres Cajun in Thibodaux - Cajun Style in Marrero

Unless you have another spot to recommend. Thanks in advance for your help!

We prefer a more intimate discovery.

Hi there, I think the best way is to rent kayaks and set off to explore a bayou. It lets you get closer to nature.

Isn’t it dangerous?

The risk is getting lost. But you can definitely hire a guide if you're not confident 🙂. Bayous aren't like the Everglades in Florida—I don’t think "airboats" can get through since it’s a flooded forest.

Bayous aren’t completely closed off. You might be thinking of mangroves. And airboats *do* exist in the Louisiana bayous.

Kayaking can indeed be dangerous. It’s not the way I’d choose to explore the bayous in Louisiana.

Thanks, that’s not very reassuring. I think I’ll stick with the rowboat instead.

Bayous aren’t completely closed off. You must be confusing them with mangroves

No, I’m not confusing them with mangroves. An airboat tour is a total tourist trap. So it’s up to you to pick the option that works best for you

At that point, you’re not really living life anymore. You know you can get into a car accident, right?

Have YOU actually tried kayaking on a bayou???

It’s more like something you’d suggest to your worst enemy…

Have YOU tried kayaking on a bayou yourself?

Hi! No, not in Louisiana but in Florida. And if I had the chance to paddle on a bayou, I wouldn’t hesitate for a second, obviously. Once I’ve paid for a flight ticket to the USA, I don’t spend my money doing anything else. Plus, I’ve already kayaked among crocs in the Brazilian Pantanal—check my profile, I made a travel journal about it. As for Louisiana, if I could spend my retirement there, I’d do it without hesitation.

Evening—no, not in Louisiana but in Florida. And if I had the chance to paddle through a bayou, I wouldn’t hesitate for a second, obviously. Plus, I’ve already kayaked among crocs in the Brazilian Pantanal—check my profile, I made a travel journal about it. As for Louisiana, if I could spend my retirement there, I’d do it without a second thought.

Comparing Florida to Louisiana is pretty telling of a subjective geographical knowledge of the regions.

Hey, just a reminder that on THIS general forum, we have a duty to give (good) advice... and suggesting this activity to just anyone might be sending them into a risky situation! The Vermilion Bayou or Lake Martin by boat are more sensible options. Adventurous and experienced folks can do otherwise—okay, that’s their choice.

What I wrote in my first message is that if you don’t feel comfortable, you should hire a guide
