Renting a scooter in Fiji

Hi, I’m heading to Viti Levu, the main island, for a few days’ vacation. I usually rent a two-wheeler to keep some independence. On several forums, people advised against it—first because it’s not really the local culture, and also because of the road conditions and local driving habits. But I’m a bit wary of English-language forums where the typical vacation is just airport-resort-airport with a taxi in between. Can you confirm if it’s really that risky compared to, say, Southeast Asia? What are the alternatives? Buses, taxis? Thanks!

Okay, now that I'm back, I can answer my own question. (Just to clarify, on Viti Levu I only saw the stretch between Lautoka and Maui Bay.)

As for the condition of the roads, overall the Queen's Road is perfectly drivable, despite a few bumps here and there (but no worse than the backroads in France). Same goes for stray animals—yes, there are some, but it's no worse than anywhere else in the world. The real issue is more about the culture: people aren’t used to two-wheelers at all, and given the local driving style—sometimes a bit wild/chaotic—I wouldn’t feel safe on a scooter. Plus, the few rental bikes available probably aren’t in great shape...

On the other hand, the local express bus service is really efficient (though a little confusing) and super cheap. So as long as you don’t stray too far from the main road (which is usually the case for tourist spots), it’s more than enough.

In conclusion, I’d only recommend renting a scooter if you really value your independence and have an adventurous streak. Otherwise, the buses cover most needs, and for somewhere a bit more remote, you can walk a little (or take a taxi now and then).

Hi there, I’m planning to stay for 7 nights in the Fiji islands but there’s not much info about this destination. I’m thinking of booking 2 nights on the main island on the way in and out, plus 3 nights in the Yasawas and 2 days in the Mamanucas. I’m looking for beautiful, idyllic beaches. Is it easy to get to these islands? Are some better connected than others without having to go back through Nadi? Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi Carole, Yes, it’s possible—South Sea Cruises offers a route that doesn’t loop back through Nadi. At Port Denarau, there are several competitors, but I’m not sure if they offer the same or just round trips from their base. Either way, I’d really recommend staying multiple nights on the main islands. Day trips seem a bit disappointing. That said, both archipelagos (Mamanucas and Yasawa) are very touristy. So, it’s either a resort at 150 € per night (or you have to book *way* in advance) or homestays, where comfort is pretty limited.
