Road trip in Kenya: 4x4 or regular car?

I’m planning a road trip in Kenya and I’m wondering about renting a vehicle. I’d like to know if a 4x4 is really necessary if I book safaris directly through the lodges in the reserves. If I only need a vehicle for long trips (e.g., Nairobi->Masai Mara and Masai Mara->Amboseli, then later to Mombasa), is it worth renting a 4x4?

You can definitely get around Kenya’s roads without a 4x4 in a sedan. Over the past few years, road conditions have really improved. That said, traffic can still be dangerous, and you should absolutely avoid driving at night (starting around 6:30 PM every day of the year, since we’re on the equator).

However, in my opinion, if you plan to rent a car for general travel and then book a separate vehicle with a guide for lodges, it’ll end up costing you a lot more than just reserving a vehicle with a guide from the start. Unless you’re only doing a few days of safari and sticking to areas outside the parks or reserves...

When are you planning this trip for?

For the Amboseli–Mombasa route, you’d be better off taking the train and renting a car on the coast if needed...

We’re planning to travel during All Saints' Day.

Is it really that dangerous to drive at night? We’ll be arriving by plane in Nairobi at 8:20 PM, so it’ll definitely be dark. I was thinking of heading straight to Naivasha to save time... maybe that’s unrealistic, I’m not sure.

Another question: when you mention booking a vehicle with a guide, does that mean they’ll be with us the whole time from the start of the rental until we return the car? If so, do we need to arrange their accommodation?

Regarding night driving, I hope travelers who’ve done a self-drive in Kenya will chime in with their thoughts. Personally, we’ve always gone with a driver for this destination.

Vehicles carrying tourists aren’t allowed to drive at night. I’m not sure what the rule is for rental cars. Be extremely careful if you do: there are always animals wandering around, and I’m not sure other vehicles (motorcycles, bikes, etc.) will be well-lit.

If you arrive at 8:20 PM, factoring in immigration formalities and baggage claim, you won’t leave the airport before 9:30–10:00 PM at best. Then you’ll need to pick up your rental car and hit the road… That doesn’t seem reasonable at all. When we arrive in Nairobi in the evening, we stay at a nearby hotel with a free shuttle, and our guide picks us up the next morning around 7 AM.

Be careful if your trip is planned for November—it’s likely to be the "short rainy season," which in recent years has been quite heavy and even catastrophic in 2023 (increasingly hard to predict with climate change). The Maasai Mara could be "very wet"… so plan for a good 4x4. As for the guide, yes, they’re with you for the duration of the rental. Usually, their accommodation is included in the price you’re quoted—you don’t need to worry about it (but double-check when booking). Most camps or lodges have accommodations for guides.
