Bad news! Tax in Mauritius

Bad news: starting October 2025, the Mauritian tourism ministry is introducing a new tax of 3 € per night per traveler, on top of the existing 55 € fee. This could make other destinations like Madagascar—where no tourism tax is charged—more appealing.

Hi there, Just a little heads-up, Almost every country in the world charges a daily tourist tax per passenger—France included. I don’t see why Mauritius would be an exception. An average 15-day stay would cost around 45 € in taxes. We’ll survive!!!!! Comparing it to Madagascar is ridiculous. Tourists there get "taxed" by the police, military, and immigration officers. (Stayed there in 2001)

Hi, I know full well that (almost) all countries impose a tourist tax. However, Mauritius already had one of 55 € per traveler. The new tax of 3 € per night per traveler is being added on top. As far as I'm concerned, since I stay on the island for more than 2 months in winter, this will represent an extra expense for my wife and me of over 400 €... that's not insignificant, right? Hi, Clearly, we don’t have the same sources! The tax of 3 € per night per traveler will apply starting October 1, 2025 and for all accommodations: hotels, whether luxury or not, guesthouses, rented villas, etc... Here’s the "official" proof on the Mauritian tourism website:

Hi there, The average stay in Mauritius is about two weeks. Beyond that, up to two months, it becomes exceptional and reserved for a certain category of travelers. So at that level, we accept the local constraints. Back to Madagascar, I was referring to the unofficial tax imposed by police, army, and customs representatives. It starts at immigration at the airport when presenting your passport (don’t forget to slip a bill in euros between the pages). Then, while driving, there are non-existent tolls on the roads.

The world record for taxes is in Bhutan ($100 per day).
