Driving from Makopong to Mabuasehube by 4x4

Hi everyone. We want to drive from: Makopong Border to the Mabuasehube gate. We’ve seen that there’s a lot of sand—no problem for us—but we’d like to know if the route isn’t closed. We’ll be there on November 19, 2025.

Thanks in advance for any replies

Hi there,

I can’t give you any info on the route via Makopong, but if you’re heading from Jo’burg to Mabuasehube, I’ve gone through the Skilpadshek border post (Lobatse) three times, then headed toward Sekoma, dropped down a bit toward Khakhea, and left the paved road to take the "Cut Line." There isn’t much sand. I don’t know what the conditions are like in November, but in May, June, and August, it was driving really well. Hardly anyone goes that way, and we even camped without seeing any vehicles pass by. One time we drove a bit at night and had multiple encounters (jackals, badgers, antelopes, not to mention guinea fowl, owls, etc.).

Check out the route I mapped on Wikiloc: https://fr.wikiloc.com/itineraires-tout-terrain/sekoma-to-mabuasehube-east-gate-via-short-cut-line-9626975

So, coming from Makopong, you just need to drive toward Sekoma and turn left before Khakhea—it’s signposted (at least when coming from the north).
