United States: Sharp Decline in Summer 2025 Bookings

Travel bookings to the United States are seeing a significant drop in France for summer 2025, with over a 30% decrease in the spring and around -11% for summer departures.

Several reasons explain this disengagement:

an unfavorable exchange rate at the start of the year, very high prices on the ground (accommodation, dining), negative experiences with immigration, as well as a political and social context perceived as off-putting (civil rights, safety, tense social climate).

Tourism professionals also note difficulties for Florida and some Southern states, while destinations like New York and Orlando are faring better.

The recent drop in the dollar and airfares could, however, encourage last-minute departures, and tourism stakeholders are betting on a gradual recovery starting this autumn, with major events planned for 2026 like the World Cup or the 250th anniversary of the United States.

Let's not kid ourselves. Mass tourism has exploded in recent years. That won’t change the tourist invasion at certain sites any time soon.

Hi there, this could be a problem for Florida in particular, since its economy relies heavily on tourism. From what I know, there’s no income tax in that state, so fewer tourists mean less tax revenue. Plus, the cost of living is way too high in the U.S.—too much inflation. The article linked really highlights this well. I also heard on an economic news outlet that most American households have two jobs just to get by, so the majority can’t afford domestic vacations, like a trip to Orlando, for example.

I just got back from a road trip in the American West. I was expecting chaos, especially around the 4th of July week. I was actually surprised by how few people there were in the parks and big cities. And on my Paris-San Francisco flight out, there were still about forty seats left in economy— the cabin crew told me that was unusual...

Despite that, another surprise: While tourist numbers seem to be down, hotel prices keep skyrocketing. If hotels aren’t filling up, wouldn’t they adjust their prices? So now I’m not sure what to make of this "disaffection" for Uncle Sam’s country!

All this, combined with the cost of living, which I also found really high even when shopping at Walmart, makes me question whether I’d choose the U.S. for a future trip...
