Hi there,

We’re heading to South Africa in August, with a basic itinerary: Johannesburg, Kruger Park, and finishing up in Cape Town. My question—I know it’s winter there—what are the temperatures like? How should we dress? Thanks for your tips!

Hi there, The answer will be more objective than any you might get on this forum. Weather varies from year to year... https://www.partir.com/Afrique-du-sud/Kruger+National+Park/986833/quand-partir.html

Hi,

Nights can be chilly at this time of year, while days are pleasant.

Hi there, August Generally sunny with temperatures ranging from mild to warm during the day. Cool to cold at night. If you're staying in a private reserve or going on a game drive, a beanie isn’t a bad idea, and neither is a puffer jacket. That’s for KNP (Kruger National Park). Temperatures are usually mild in Cape Town (CT), but it can rain.

I think you already knew how to look up estimates online yourself and were asking for firsthand experiences. Having visited South Africa for 25 years, I’ve gotten a bit like the frog on the ladder (not the one trying to be bigger than the ox—we’ve all been to South Africa more than once, and some of us have even been to the Western Cape, right?)

Hi there,

You’ll mainly need spring clothing.

Plus some summer clothes and a few winter items (for evenings and early mornings, like jeans, fleece, a sweater, and a windbreaker. A very warm outfit with a hat/gloves if you're planning to do a safari in an open 4x4 at 5 AM!) A rain jacket is also a good idea.

A cozy pair of pajamas can be useful if you're sleeping in a tent (igloo-style or safari tent) in Kruger.

Normally in Kruger, daytime temps are a pleasant low 20s°C. But I’ve experienced 38°C. And as low as 10°C at night. Even colder near Blyde Canyon.

Bottom line: be ready for anything!😄

Hmm… Missing autumn clothes… 😅

Hey Michel!

Yeah...

Pack clothes for daytime temps between 15 and 25 degrees, but be ready for wind-chill that can feel like zero at dawn in an open 4x4 racing down an elephant track, and up to 40 degrees during the day if there’s a winter heatwave.
