Traveling Without a Car in Croatia

Hi there, We’d like to visit Montenegro without a car and are looking for routes by either bus or train. We’ll be traveling for 12 days. Thanks!

Could we ask the moderators to change the title? It says Croatia instead of Montenegro.

I just got back from Montenegro. It’s a really beautiful country, apart from the coastal strip ruined by mass tourism—just like everywhere from Croatia to Albania.

I didn’t see many buses. And there are so many scenic routes that are absolutely stunning. How do you explore them without a car?

You’ll end up relying on travel agencies, and if you don’t like crowds or groups, well...

Hi there, We took a cycling trip in Montenegro and northern Albania from June 2 to June 20. I can confirm what’s been said—there are few buses, and they only run between major cities. I’d recommend renting a car so you can take your time in certain spots, as the landscapes are stunning, from Herceg Novi to Plužine, via Nikšić and the serpentine road, then from Plužine to Žabljak... On the other hand, the coastal road isn’t worth it—it’s concreted over and crowded. It’s worth doing the loop around the Bay of Kotor. And if you have a bit of time, skip Podgorica (it’s not interesting) and head to Albania to explore the north—it’s also gorgeous, full of contrasts, and welcoming. Have a great trip! Bergot

Hi JLuc, which countries have you visited where it’s easy to bike with panniers and pitch a tent along the way? Any route suggestions or GPS points? I’d be interested. Thanks for the info. JPierre

Good evening Max, We’re retirees, both 70 years old, and we travel with old bikes and panniers, which we usually sell for between 30 and 50 €. We often stay in *gîtes d’étape* and youth hostels... We’ve traveled for five consecutive years in Morocco, around Ouarzazate, Tafraoute (check out Jean Luc Simon’s "Morocco by Bike" on YouTube). We loved it so much we’re thinking of going back next year. We also went to Puglia in Italy—nice—and from Munich to Venice, discovering Slovenia along the way. A really pleasant country!

We did part of the EuroVelo 6 route, from Passau, Germany, to Budapest—interesting for the cities we passed through. We only take small roads—great but tough in the Moroccan Atlas: little traffic and amazing hospitality. We pack our bikes in boxes for flights. I’d love to hear about any cool trips you’ve done abroad or even in France. Happy bank holiday Monday!
