Heavy flooding in the Okavango Delta
Ortense · 2025-07-10
Hi everyone,
This update was shared on June 26:
The Department of Wildlife and National Parks in Botswana, under the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, has announced temporary route closures in the renowned Moremi Game Reserve due to seasonal flooding from the Okavango Delta. The detour at the Fourth Bridge is currently submerged, and as a result, the Third Bridge via Xakanaxa has also become inaccessible. For visitor safety, both routes are temporarily closed.
Nature is absolutely stunning right now, but unfortunately, this also means that exploration plans might be disrupted if you’ve booked in the area.
Any updates on the situation are welcome.
Have a great day!
Ortense
Lots of water in the Okavango Delta

Hi there,
Yeah, it's tricky—the water’s rising. Third Bridge seems inaccessible. Around the Khwai area, you also have to cross waterways regularly. I’d strongly advise against attempting to drive through water-covered or muddy areas—rescue services are almost nonexistent, and you can’t leave the vehicle. Kaziikini is a good alternative since there’s a local guide who comes with you. The South Gate area should also remain passable, as well as North Gate.

Hi ortense. Thanks for this valuable info. We’re also planning a self-drive trip to Namibia and Botswana with a fitted 4x4, including a visit to the Okavango Delta. I’m looking for some tips. We prefer campsites. Do you have any recommendations for camping spots and safer routes in the area? Thanks in advance for your reply, and have a great day
