Questions about our 3-week Kenya itinerary

What a pleasure to be back on this forum—I thought it had closed down? If it has indeed reopened, that’s fantastic news! :)

My wife and I are heading to Kenya for three weeks starting August 30th, and I’d love some help fine-tuning our itinerary and answering a few questions. Here’s the rough draft I’ve put together:

08/30: Nairobi (2 nights) 09/01-09/04: Masai Mara (3 nights, then return to Nairobi) 09/05-09/07: Rift Valley/Nakuru/Hell’s Gate/etc. (2 nights, then return to Nairobi) 09/08: Nairobi > Amboseli (2 nights) 09/10: Amboseli > Tsavo East (2 nights) 09/12: Tsavo > Mombasa (1 night) 09/13: Mombasa > Kilifi (2 nights) 09/15: Kilifi > Malindi > Lamu (3 nights) 09/18: Return to Nairobi 09/19: Departure at 23:40

I’ve got a ton of questions, but I’ll try to summarize them somewhat:

Do you have any recommendations for tour operators for the safaris? Right now, I’ve planned 11 days for the "safari" portion from Masai Mara to Tsavo, with a lot of returns to Nairobi—is it possible to optimize this without booking a full tour with a single agency? Aside from the cost, I’m worried I won’t feel very free if we do a 9-day experience covering all of it, but maybe that’s the most recommended option? Do all the destinations up to Mombasa require booking a tour and hiring a guide in advance (or having your own vehicle), or are some more open to improvisation? We’d also like to meet people and not just do safaris, but our current itinerary doesn’t really allow for that—would you recommend cutting back on safaris and visiting villages between Nairobi and the coast instead? We were also considering the Taita Hills if possible—what do you think? Is Kilifi a good idea? We’ve heard it’s more authentic than Diani and we’re interested in the bioluminescent plankton, but I feel like the detour complicates the trip a bit.

You can probably tell from my questions that our biggest concern right now is booking the safaris. We can’t really afford to spend 2000 € each for 4 days, but we also won’t be taking a trip like this again anytime soon, so we want to make the most of it!

If your trip is planned for August 30th of this year (2025), you might want to hurry to find solutions, because once you're there, you won’t have much choice other than taking what’s available—and it’ll probably be more expensive than if you’d planned several months in advance.

Driving in Kenya is at least anxiety-inducing, not to mention dangerous. I wouldn’t recommend driving yourself.

I don’t see the point of returning to Nairobi after each stay in a reserve, especially since Nakuru is on the way to the Maasai Mara. !!

I hope you know that entry fees and overnight taxes are VERY high in the Maasai Mara—it’s the price of its "success." Your entire stay is going to be quite expensive.

Sorry I can’t answer your questions more thoroughly—the topic is really broad. Just one purely personal piece of advice: "Do LESS, but do it WELL!!"

Yes, we’re aware we’re behind schedule, and we’ll try to book at least the Masai Mara this week. Same goes for the "do less but do it well" approach: we’re considering dropping Tsavo from the itinerary (for example) to lighten the cost on one hand, and give us more time for the rest on the other.

I’ve read a bit about driving there, and honestly, I don’t think it’s for me—I already get nervous driving in Corsica or Scotland! :)

There’s really no point in returning to Nairobi after each stay, but I had the impression (maybe wrongly) that this is what tour operators suggest, and that unless we book the entire trip with a single operator, it’d be hard to avoid. The downside of that is, first, it’d probably cost more for the Rift Valley part, where it seems possible to explore more freely, and second, we’re a bit wary of the "organized tour" vibe where we’d spend half the trip in a car with the same people.

Honestly, I don’t know what to tell you! I don’t really get the purpose of your trip! ? I wonder if you’re heading to the reserves because you’re *really* into nature and wildlife, or if it’s just to say you’ve “done Kenya” when you get back. (Which would be totally your right, I admit).

Personally, our last three trips to Kenya were with a driver-guide and in a group (big or small—last time it was a small one) with a set itinerary that worked for us.

By the way, one thing puzzles me:

A package tour where we’d spend half the trip in a car with the same people.

Are you planning this trip as a couple or as part of a group? (Which would lower the cost...)

Either way, on a trip like this, you’ll spend a lot of time in the car....

If it’s just the two of you, you can absolutely ask a tour operator to create *your* ideal itinerary. But again, this kind of trip needs at least 6 months of planning. And with only a month and a half before departure... it’s cutting it too close in my opinion, especially since it’ll be high season...

Haha, I’m not sure I get what’s surprising about my questions, but the goal of our trip is really our interest in culture, wildlife, and landscapes—not just being able to say we’ve "done" Kenya :) It’s just that we’ve never traveled in Africa except for Morocco, never done safaris, and we’re not really sure how it all works.

We’d prefer to be just the two of us, but we’re not completely against the idea of traveling in a group. My doubt was actually about that: a 2-day safari with a group doesn’t bother us, but we were wondering if we’d really want to spend half the trip with the same 6 people (in the case of a 9-day tour covering all the parks we’re thinking of visiting).

We’ve reached out to some travel agencies, and it seems (thankfully) still possible to organize the trip now.
