What are some good trekking routes in the Vosges?

Saispasmoi · 2025-07-18

hi there I live near Dole, so not too far away, and I sometimes go hiking (Camino de Santiago, Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert, etc.), and I’d love it if someone could suggest a trek in the Vosges—I really don’t know the area well. (Yeah, I know, I’m a little embarrassed about that.) If you could recommend a nice route. Arrival by car or train, doesn’t matter. Thanks so much!

Hi there,

There’s the Vosges Ridgeway (GR5) covering about 80 km. It runs north to south via the Col du Bonhomme, the Col de la Schlucht, the Hohneck massif, the Markstein, the Grand Ballon, and the Vieil Armand. It overlooks the Alsace plain to the east and the Vosges department to the west. You can find some great info here: https://www.parc-ballons-vosges.fr/decouvrir/activites-nature/randonner-dans-le-parc/balades-libres/balades-le-long-de-la-route-des-cretes/

Hi! We’re not sure how many days or stages you’re planning—3 or 4 days, or 3 weeks? Wissembourg to Belfort! Personally, I’ve only done day hikes, mostly in the Haut-Rhin department (68). That was ages ago when I was a teen and had family in Munster. If I were to do a short trek, I’d tackle part of the GR 5 in the southern part of the range—what I think is the most interesting section. Roughly from Saint-Amarin or Thann to Giromagny... That matches what 4ecofuel said.

I highly recommend this one—it’s amazing: 3 lakes and farm-inns!

He finally planned a "trek" Generally, a trek takes place over several days, at least a week with stages... it's not just a simple 4-hour "hike". That said, he doesn’t seem interested in our answers anymore🙁

What are the best trekking routes in the Vosges?

Sorry for not replying earlier—I was really off the grid!

That said, I’d like to start from Le Bonhomme or Lapoutroie or thereabouts, and do a 3- or 4-day trek staying in gîte étapes with half-board in dorms. I’d love to do the Sentier des Roches and other hikes in the area. Bookings seem tricky since I’m going the second week of September. Thanks so much for your help, and sorry again for my slow replies!
