GASPÉ - FORILLON NATIONAL PARK - INTERPRETATION CENTER

GPS coordinates: 48.837567, -64.214993

Our first stop in Gaspésie was at the Forillon National Park Interpretation Center.

We ventured onto the hiking trail located near the center.

At 600 meters long and accessible to people with reduced mobility, it forms a loop around the interpretation center.

Several interpretive panels have been set up along the route, giving us information about the park’s geological evolution, the wildlife it shelters, the settlement of this region, and fishing activities.

It also offers stunning viewpoints of the park’s high cliffs and the coastline, particularly the Cap-des-Rosiers Lighthouse.

GASPÉ - FORILLON NATIONAL PARK - MONT-SAINT-ALBAN TRAIL

GPS coordinates: 48.810241, -64.221438 Parking GPS coordinates: 48.811325, -64.226891 Observation tower

The hike starts from the Cap Bon-Ami parking lot.

The Mont-Saint-Alban trail is a hike that offers several viewpoints over the coastline and leads to a tall observation tower.

This trail forms a 7.8-kilometer loop. However, like many others, we decided to do a round trip to the observation tower instead, which is a total distance of 3.6 kilometers.

The trail begins with a steep climb, and rocks and roots litter the ground. The ascent is constant for most of the route, and several staircases have been built in certain spots to make the walk easier.

Three lookout points have been set up along this route, offering beautiful views of the river, the Cap-des-Rosiers lighthouse, and Cap Bon-Ami.

Located at the top of the mountain, at an altitude of 283 meters, the tall observation tower provides a stunning 360° view of the surrounding region.

In addition to the Cap-des-Rosiers lighthouse and Cap Bon-Ami, it offers a spectacular view of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, Forillon Park, and, in the distance, Percé Rock and Bonaventure Island.

In this area, the turquoise waters of the Gulf of St. Lawrence are just as breathtaking as those of the Caribbean Sea. The landscape is truly magnificent.

We turned back and, just before reaching the parking lot, took a small detour onto the trail leading to the Cap Bon-Ami lookout to admire the beach, cliffs, and seabirds.

An entry fee is required. For more details, please visit their website: https://www.pc.gc.ca/en/pn-np/qc/forillon

GASPÉ - FORILLON NATIONAL PARK - LA CHUTE TRAIL

GPS coordinates: 48.843247, -64.265546 Parking GPS coordinates: 48.844171, -64.266692 Waterfall

This forest trail forms a 1-kilometer loop. However, it’s quite steep. Several wooden staircases and walkways are scattered along the route.

It lets us discover a lovely stream that cascades down multiple rocky tiers covered in lush green vegetation. You’ll notice plenty of birds in this area.

But the main attraction of this hike is a 17-meter-high waterfall set in an enchanting landscape.

Its waters flow gently along beautiful rock walls before spilling into a shallow basin.

GASPÉ - FORILLON NATIONAL PARK - LES GRAVES TRAIL

GPS coordinates: 48.792134, -64.225039 Grande-Grave GPS coordinates: 48.769164, -64.193430 Anse-aux-Améridiens GPS coordinates: 48.751077, -64.161071 End of the trail

Starting from Grande-Grave, the distance to cover is 15.2 kilometers round-trip. Starting from Anse-aux-Améridiens, the distance is 9 kilometers round-trip.

Our hike began at Anse-aux-Améridiens on the gravel trail, which is also accessible by bike.

There’s also a pedestrian trail that goes through the woods. However, there was a sign at the start of the trail warning us that a bear had been spotted in the area.

So, we decided to stick to the gravel trail, which was much busier anyway.

This trail runs along the Gulf of the St. Lawrence River and first leads to a red-and-white lighthouse perched atop a cliff at Cap-Gaspé.

Then, the last section of the trail descends into the cliff and leads to a viewpoint called the "end of the world."

At this spot, we were able to observe several seabirds as well as seals.

When we returned to the lighthouse, we took a short break to gaze out at the endless sea.

That’s when I spotted a porcupine waddling cheerfully near us. It was searching for food and paid no attention to our presence.

It was the first time I’d encountered this animal in its natural habitat. I should mention they’re frequently seen in this area.

We also spotted another porcupine at the edge of the trail, as well as some partridges.

PERCÉ - CHUTE DE LA RIVIÈRE-AUX-ÉMERAUDES

GPS coordinates: 48.576058, -64.350126 Waterfall GPS coordinates: 48.568349, -64.306719 Sentier des Rivières

The Rivière du Portage is also known as the Rivière-aux-Émeraudes. You’ll understand why—its waters are truly emerald in color, making this place absolutely paradise-like.

It’s located in the Coin-du-Banc area, near Percé.

You can get there via a hiking trail that runs along the river. That’s about 4 kilometers one way.

However, you should know that you can also drive to a parking lot near the waterfall.

From the parking lot, you’ll need to walk about 500 meters along a forest trail and descend a staircase that leads to a platform offering a stunning viewpoint of the waterfall.

The waterfall is gorgeous, but it’s the color of the water that’s truly impressive. WOW and REWOW! Just as beautiful as the Caribbean Sea.

Just a reminder—we’re in the Gaspésie! You’ll realize it as soon as you step into the water!

100 meters farther down, after following the trail and descending more stairs, we reach the riverbank.

A short wooden footbridge leads us to a pebble beach, giving us a full view of the waterfall. It flows into a lovely pool where you can swim, though there’s no lifeguard on duty.

Walking along the pebbles, we notice how incredibly clear the river water is. That’s where the saying "crystal clear" comes from!

PERCÉ - BONAVENTURE ISLAND NATIONAL PARK

GPS coordinates: 48.495545, -64.160702 Bonaventure Island GPS coordinates: 48.476204, -64.305686 Parking

Bonaventure Island boasts a rich historical and natural heritage. Its flora and fauna, including the famous northern gannets, make this spot a must-visit during your trip to this beautiful region of the Gaspésie.

Of course, you get there by boat ($). Tickets can be purchased at one of the ticket offices in the town of Percé.

Several departures are offered throughout the day, but no reservations are possible. So, first come, first served.

When you arrive on the island, a guide gathers everyone and gives information about the main attractions of the island as well as the different hiking trails you can explore.

Afterward, everyone is asked to present their access pass (Sépaq $). It’s highly recommended to buy it online. However, if you can’t, you can purchase it directly on-site.

Before starting our hike, we went to the restaurant. We ordered a lobster sandwich and a dessert and sat at a picnic table with a view of the town of Percé and its famous Percé Rock.

What could be better than enjoying a delicious meal in front of this stunning, almost postcard-perfect scenery?

We ventured onto the Les Colonies trail (2.8 kilometers) and the Chemin du Roy trail (4.9 kilometers) to form a loop and avoid backtracking.

The Les Colonies Trail lets you observe the largest migratory bird sanctuary in North America, which includes the northern gannet colony, estimated at over 100,000 birds.

No superlatives can truly capture this unique spectacle. Northern gannets are birds of extreme beauty and rare elegance.

They have white plumage and a long neck with a pale yellow nape. Their eyes are light gray, surrounded by a blue ring, and their long, slender beaks are gray.

There are so many of them, and I’ve never heard such a cacophony or smelled such a strong odor of guano. But you quickly forget that minor inconvenience because the sight is absolutely sensational.

The youngest birds have thick dark brown down, and it takes about four years for them to develop their adult plumage.

Until they can take flight, they’re fed by their parents, who plunge their beaks into the chicks’ throats to regurgitate partially digested fish. It’s quite a sight!

The Chemin du Roy trail first crosses through the forest. It’s dotted with footbridges and several wooden staircases.

It then follows the coastline, allowing you to spot cormorants and gray seals.

We passed by several homes and a cemetery that bear witness to the island’s life in the last century.

The view of the coastline and Percé Rock is breathtaking.

PERCÉ - HIKE TO THE FOOT OF ROCHER PERCÉ

GPS coordinates: 48.528525, -64.214509 Parking at Plage de l'Anse du Nord GPS coordinates: 48.524399, -64.199443 Rocher Percé GPS coordinates: 48.524769, -64.205270 Cap Mont Joli GPS coordinates: 48.518855, -64.215547 Belvedere on the promenade GPS coordinates: 48.516198, -64.218559 Riôtel Percé

It’s possible to reach the foot of Rocher Percé at low tide. We parked our car in the parking lot at Plage de l'Anse du Nord and hiked along the edge of the beach to get to the rock.

When the tide is low, the sea water recedes enough to form a passage (called a tombolo) that lets you walk right up to the base of the rock.

Access is allowed, but not recommended by the tourism office because there are obviously risks of falling rocks (check if this is still the case when you visit).

Luckily, we’d put on our rubber boots because we had to cross some areas where water was trapped between the rocks.

It’s only when you reach the base of the rock that you realize just how massive this iconic landmark of the Gaspésie really is.

At 433 meters long, 90 meters wide, and 88 meters high, let’s just say we felt tiny next to this giant standing proudly in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

We walked along the walls of the rock and tried to reach the hole in it. However, we decided not to take any chances and turned back because it was very windy and the waves were crashing against the shore.

Getting to Rocher Percé gave us some beautiful viewpoints of the town of Percé, Cap Bon Ami, and Plage de l'Anse du Nord.

The tip of Cap Bon Ami is constantly eroding. The erosion has even given it a spectacular shape.

We then went to the top of Cap Bon Ami and walked along the promenade that runs along the coastline. Both Cap Bon Ami and the belvedere on the promenade offer a 360° view of the town, the coastline, and Rocher Percé.

The backyard of the Riôtel Percé hotel also offers a stunning panoramic view of Rocher Percé at sunset.

PERCÉ GEOPARK - SUSPENDED GLASS PLATFORM

GPS coordinates: 48.521623, -64.217327 Reception GPS coordinates: 48.523164, -64.225949 Platform

The suspended glass platform ($) at the UNESCO Global Geopark of Percé has been accessible since June 2017 and is open year-round.

Located at the top of a cliff on Mont Ste-Anne, 200 meters above sea level, it offers stunning views of the town of Percé as well as the Gulf of St. Lawrence, including the Percé Rock and Bonaventure Island.

We had to take off our shoes to walk on the glass section, and since we visited during the pandemic, wearing a mask was also required.

There’s a large terrace with chairs and tables—perfect for a little lunch break while enjoying the breathtaking landscape.

There’s also a zipline on-site. It starts right next to the platform but wasn’t operational during our visit.

To reach the platform, you can hike up. It takes about 30 to 45 minutes, and it’s a steady climb.

However, a shuttle service ($) is available. It departs near the reception area.

The Geopark also features several hiking trails leading to lookouts, caves, and crevasses.

There are even small tables where you can take a lunch break to soak in the incredible scenery even more.

PERCÉ GEOPARK - MAGIC FOREST LOOP

GPS coordinates: 48.523164, -64.225949

The Magic Forest Loop is a 900-meter hiking trail that winds through a forest of twisted cedars and moss-covered rocks, making the landscape absolutely enchanting.

The trail is relatively easy, except for a short rugged section that requires constant attention to avoid roots and rocks scattered on the ground.

You’ll also need to climb some stairs leading to the top of small Mont Sainte-Anne, where two lookouts offer different viewpoints of the area.

It’s on this trail that you can see the famous "Bottomless Hole." This is an underground cavity formed by the dissolution of limestone rocks.

The Belvedere Trail is 2.5 kilometers long (one way only). However, you need to add an extra 600 meters if you start from the Geopark welcome center, as you first have to take the Surveyors' Trail.

The Belvedere Trail leads to the summit of Mont Sainte-Anne, which is 340 meters high.

Several belvederes have been built along the route, including a suspended glass platform ($), and they offer some really pretty viewpoints over the town of Percé as well as the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, particularly the Percé Rock and Bonaventure Island.

When we were there, the wind was blowing strongly at the top of Mont Sainte-Anne. I don’t know if that’s always the case in this area. The strength of the wind really impressed us.

A statue of Sainte-Anne stands on a promontory at the summit of the mountain. It overlooks a wooden platform with several prayer benches.

An interpretive panel explains that this place was once a very important pilgrimage site for Indigenous people, who came to worship their god, while white settlers came annually to show their devotion to Sainte-Anne, the patron saint of fishermen.

Nowadays, many people still come here to celebrate Sainte-Anne’s feast day on July 26.

GPS coordinates: 48.52490, -64.22832 Sources Trail GPS coordinates: 48.52493, -64.24681 Les Pieds Croches Trail

After hiking the Belvédères Trail, we ventured onto the Sources Trail, a forested path that’s 1.7 kilometers long (one way only).

This trail doesn’t have any viewpoints, but it leads to the Les Pieds Croches Trail, which is 1.1 kilometers long (one way only). That one offers excellent views of the Route des Failles, a winding scenic road that snakes through the mountains in a majestic forest.

Since we wanted to do a loop hike to avoid backtracking, we then headed to the Crevasse Trail, which will be the subject of our next video.

PERCÉ GEOPARK - THE CREVASSE TRAIL

GPS coordinates: 48.532991, -64.250368 Crevasse

The Crevasse Trail is located behind Mont Blanc. It's an easy trail, 500 meters long.

To get there, you need to take one of the three hiking trails that lead to it. In our case, we came from the Pieds Croches Trail.

So, we only had to walk 100 meters on the Crevasse Trail to reach the lookout.

This lookout lets you observe a 60-meter-deep crevasse in the mountainside.

This phenomenon was caused by the erosion of rock formations over thousands of years.

As we continued our hike, we reached a second lookout with a lovely view of the Barachois de la Malbaie.

It includes salt and freshwater marshes, a peat bog, coastal forests, and beaches, making it an essential habitat for many animal and plant species.

The Petite Crevasse lookout, at the end of the trail, lets you see another fissure in a high cliff along the coastline.

The grotto is actually a rounded vertical cliff face where a waterfall flows into a small basin.

It’s located on Mont Sainte-Anne. You can reach it via a gravel road and a short trail, totaling about 1.7 kilometers.

However, it’s also accessible via the Grande Coupe trail. That’s the route we took to get to the grotto.

This spot is a place of reflection dedicated to the Virgin Mary. A statue has even been placed high up on the cliff, to the left of the waterfall.

BONAVENTURE - THE MISCHIEVOUS ONE OF THE BONAVENTURE RIVER

GPS coordinates: 48.099790, -65.468628 144 Route du Club

The waters of the Bonaventure River are renowned for their clarity. In fact, they are among the clearest waters in the world. A class R2 rapid on this river earned it the name "The Mischievous One."

First, we headed to the belvedere ($) located at the entrance of the site. It offers a stunning panoramic view of this very winding river. You can already notice the clarity of its waters.

After that, we drove to the pebble beach. There’s a large parking lot near the river.

The amazement reaches its peak when you approach the river. Its crystal-clear waters are emerald green. Absolutely breathtaking!

There’s also a sandy beach if you head to the right side of the river.

It’s possible to go paddleboarding on this river. In fact, we saw a few people doing it during our visit.

We took the opportunity to go for a swim. I won’t lie to you—the water is cold. But there was no way we were leaving this place without experiencing it.

MARIA - GRAND SAULT FALLS

GPS coordinates: 48.17290, -66.06406 Parking P6 3e Rang, Maria

Grand Sault Falls is accessible via the trail of the same name, which is part of the Carleton-Maria hiking trail network in Gaspésie.

Parking P6, located near the trail, is about 7 kilometers from Route 132.

The Grand Sault Trail is a forested trail with a round-trip distance of 2.7 miles (4.4 km). It follows the lovely Glenburnie stream, where you’ll find several small waterfalls.

The ground is scattered with rocks and roots, so you’ll need to watch your step constantly.

Wooden boardwalks and stairs have been built at several points along the route.

The forest is very humid, as you can tell from all the green moss covering the rocks and the many mushrooms growing from the ground.

We were pleasantly surprised to find a few signs along the trail. They feature colorful drawings and texts created by local artists.

A few lookout points let you admire this magnificent waterfall from different angles.

The Two-Rivers Lookout is located at the top of a cape overlooking the municipality of Matapedia.

Two trails lead to it. As for us, we decided to take the trail located across from the pharmacy. This trail is also the starting point of the International Appalachian Trail (SIA-QC).

Just park your vehicle in the parking lot next to the pharmacy and cross the road to access the trail.

The trail isn’t very long (1 km one way). However, the slope is steep and quickly takes you to the lookout at 360 meters above sea level.

Shaped like a twisted wooden tunnel, this lookout offers a spectacular view of the Matapedia and Ristigouche rivers, among other things.

The Chutes à Picot are located in Saint-André-de-Restigouche. To get there, you’ll need to drive on a dirt road (Rang Petit) for about 2.8 miles.

Along the way, there are signs by the road indicating the route to follow.

These waterfalls are accessible via a 0.6-mile one-way forest trail, which is actually part of the International Appalachian Trail (SIA-QC).

Be cautious, as the trail is scattered with roots. It also includes a few staircases and wooden boardwalks.

The trail leads to Gilmour Creek, where you can first admire some lovely small cascades.

Next, you’ll cross a boardwalk that overlooks a beautiful waterfall cascading onto a rock.

After that, the trail takes you to a long staircase you’ll need to descend to reach the base of another waterfall.

This one flows down a rocky promontory in thin streams and empties into a shallow basin. The water is crystal clear.

The scenery is stunning. The surrounding vegetation is lush and green, and the pale brown rock over which the water spreads its long white veil adds a certain charm to this enchanting site.

We also spotted several species of mushrooms along the way.

La Chute à Philomène is located in Saint-Alexandre-des-Lacs. Back in the day, streams in the Matapédia Valley were often named after the families who lived nearby.

This waterfall is no exception. It’s named after Philomène Dubé, who was the first resident, along with her husband, of the area near the falls.

At 33 meters high, you can first admire it from a boat-prow-shaped lookout that overlooks the falls. This lookout is also accessible for people with reduced mobility.

The end of the platform has a small glass section that lets you see the forest beneath your feet.

The Chute à Ti-Mé, on the Blanche River, is located in Saint-Ulric. The parking lot is on the right on Route Centrale, 2.6 kilometers from Route 132.

The name of this waterfall comes from the nickname of the previous owner of this property, Aimé Beaulieu.

The trail to reach the Chute à Ti-Mé is very short. About 300 meters to walk.

The trail is flat, except at the end where you have to descend through some rocks to access the waterfall.

The waterfall, with its cottony white appearance, cascades down a 20-meter rocky escarpment, plunges into a pool that’s surely perfect for a refreshing swim on hot summer days, and then continues its course toward the river.
