Land border crossing from Ranong (Thailand) to Kawthaung (Myanmar)

Hi,

Is the land border crossing from Ranong to Kawthaung in Myanmar still possible? Can you get a Myanmar visa at the border, and if so, for how long?

Thanks

Hi there,

To my knowledge—and unless I’m mistaken—it’s never been possible to get a Myanmar visa at land borders. You had to get it beforehand through an Embassy or use an e-visa but only if arriving by plane. Have you heard of any changes?

Hi,

@ Songsam The Kawthaung checkpoint officially accepts e-visas—that was my experience and what’s stated on the official website. I did it myself in mid-2023.

I think if you don’t have an e-visa, you can get some kind of visa on arrival that’s only valid for Kawthaung and the surrounding area… but it’s impossible to find details about this process online. Given how easy it is to get an e-visa, why not just do that?

In Kawthaung, the Victoria Cliff Hotel is amazing for the price. When I stayed there, they offered a free shuttle from immigration if you let them know in advance. From Kawthaung, you can’t reach Yangon by land—you’ll need to take a domestic flight. In Kawthaung, almost everyone accepts Thai baht as payment.
