Connection Time at JNB Airport

Hi there, I’m heading to Kruger Park for 4 days in May 2026. Departing from Paris → Skukuza via JNB on Air France. Here’s what’s worrying me: my flight lands (in theory) at JNB at 8:30 AM (Terminal A), then I’ve got a JNB → Skukuza departure at 10:05 AM (Terminal B). That leaves me with 1 hour and 35 minutes to make the connection and clear customs. I don’t have any checked luggage—just carry-on. I called Air France, and they said it’s doable (in theory) with a minimum connection time of 1 hour 30 minutes (which is why they sold the ticket), but I’ll need to move quickly. From your experience, is this realistic in practice? Can I ask customs officers to let me through as a priority? (I’ve got my flight ticket to show.) Thanks for your insights! Serge

Hi In October, I’m picking up friends in Hoedspruit. Scheduled arrival is 8:30 AM, and departure is 11:30 AM. No checked bags— that’s a good thing. Moving between terminals is quick. But Air France has already changed the arrival time on this flight for tickets booked way in advance— several times, even this year. Not 8:30 AM, but 8:50 AM… Over the last few months, out of 5 flights, on average: 1 early, 1 late, 3 roughly on time. Personally, I think it’s pretty risky.

Hi Michel85200, Thanks so much for your feedback. I just changed my ticket. I didn’t want to take the risk. Peace of mind has a price—the cost of changing the ticket. Now I’ve got 4 hours and 30 minutes ahead of me, which is more than enough to check out the duty-free shops too. Thanks again. Serge

Hi Just out of curiosity, what date are you asking about? I’m leaving on September 30th and got an 8:50 delay. Friends are joining me in mid-October. They didn’t have any changes. AF is messing us around…

It's not a bad thing to have a bit of time, I quite like the shops at JNB airport 😉.

Otherwise, 1h30 without luggage is doable, but tight. We often have a layover at JNB and 1h30 is really the minimum, but we collect our bags and check in again.

Hi, It's better to allow extra time—there might be a bit of a wait at customs even though they're well organized. msiafricaroadtrip.com have a great trip in Kruger, it's worth the trip!

Why collect your luggage? We’ve been through JNB twice and our luggage went through without any issues.

The second time, due to a delay on our first flight, we only had 50 minutes at JNB, but luckily we didn’t have to change terminals.

For two reasons: JNB Airport has a bad reputation when it comes to baggage transfers—there are quite a few "lost" bags—and it’s cheaper to book a FRA-JNB and a JNB-BBK separately. Chaining them together costs about 100 € more per ticket.

I’d also add that you need to watch the weight limit—Airlink only allows 20 kg without extra fees.

I think there was a misunderstanding on my part—you’re talking about a domestic flight, but for us, it was an international layover.

Hello, It seems Max also mentions a layover between two international flights (BBK is Kasane in Botswana).

Oh yeah, true.

Personally, I prefer having all my flights on a single booking—so combined flights—to avoid the risk of being left stranded if a flight gets canceled.
