Road conditions from Taliouine to Tafraoute and then from Tafraoute to Foum Zguid

Hello my friends, You can't imagine how happy I am to be back on my beloved site, loved by its traveling men and women!!!!! I want to travel with my little family (by car, not 4x4) from Taliouine to Tafraoute—it's a route I haven't taken yet (I've already done the one via Igherm), and I don't know the condition of the R106 road. Then, once that's done, our destination will be Zagora via Foum Zguid. I don’t want to go to Tata; my wife can’t stand that city. (I don’t mind because there’s a little local bar that’s not bad ;)) If you have any info, especially about the road conditions in October, I’d really appreciate it.

The R106 is the road from Taliouine to Tafraout… but via Igherm. You said you’ve already taken this road but haven’t actually done it? 😛

Anyway, the R106 isn’t difficult at all.

Thanks Groschats for your reply, it reassures me. The first time I took the road through Igherm, it was when leaving Taroudant on the R109, then I continued to Tata. This time, I plan to leave from Taliouine, meaning the R106. You say the road is good—that’s perfect! 🙂 Thanks.

Hi, I’d be more cautious about the state of the road. We drove it last October after the heavy rains. The tarmac and fords had been washed away in several places. The bulldozers had restored traffic, but it was just a track passable in a 4x2. That really added to the travel time.

Hello, So your trip is really recent! Thanks for letting me know! I’m still looking to take the shortest route to Tafraout. I’ve already done the long trips. One thing left is how to get from Tafraout to Tata without going through Igherm. I really don’t want to do 160 km when Tata is just a few leagues west of Tafraout. Thanks.

Hello, If we're talking about the same cities, Tafraoute is 160 km east of Tata. Here are three possible routes: - Via the R106 to Tazalaghte, then toward Talbourte (junction with the N7) and continue to Tata. This is the shortest route at 160 km and doesn’t go through Igherm. - Through the Aït Mansour gorges - Afla Ighir - Akka mines - Bpuzarif, then the N7. - Via Tazalaghte, then toward Afla Ighir. At km 80, take a right toward the Akka mines. Between the Akka mines and the N7: around 40 km was a gravel road, wide and easy in 2023.

Hi there, Check an app like Google Maps or Maps.me—you can see the routes in question there... Michelin only shows the main roads.

Hi, Today while checking Google Maps, I managed to visualize the route you suggested. What I really want to avoid are roads like the R107 that goes through Izerbi and Tarsouat. My goodness, that road is terrible—I’d never take my wheels there!!!! Thanks.

hi, Here are the 3 routes from Google Maps

I've spent quite a bit of time in this area, passing through the "gold mines", or getting lost between Tazagzaoute and Timkyet on a track that was literally in a wadi for 10/20 km or a bit more, or going via Bou Zarif..... I’ll try to find the route again at the end of the year where I ended up in Timkyet via Tazagraoute. The best one, as "dixit" Marabu, Titeki, Tazalarhite, Tagmoute, Tata, and straight to Foum Zguid on the N°12.

Sure, it’s not ideal to drive at 120 km/h, but luckily, because it’s actually pretty nice...

There are some spots along this road that are really stunning and not overrun by mass tourism...

Oh! You really made me laugh 😄😄😉 For 2 or 3 rocks, we're gonna make a whole fuss!! You're right, my friend! How I miss my Peugeot 306 sedan! I could handle any terrain, but now with the Mercedes 220, the chassis almost scraping the ground, and the missus's suitcases 😕 I really have to be careful. 🙂

Okay, I get it, even though I still insist that trails are first and foremost the driver’s problem before the car’s. It’s certain that if you don’t feel comfortable, there’s no point trying your luck if you won’t enjoy it. It’s up to you how you feel...

I know I’m not a good example because personally, I don’t care about beating up my old bangers on a trail (that’s also why I’d never take a vehicle costing more than 500 euros 😆), but letting people think this road is rough... Well, there’s still some leeway...

You seem bolder than I am. I really don’t like making the same mistake twice!! I absolutely need to make sure the road is wider than my car’s axles! You’re right, it’s a driver’s call, but I still want to stay cautious to go even further.

As for my wife, I can’t tell her anything since I live at her place 😕 I’m afraid she’ll kick me out!! 🙁
