Planning a trip to Crete at Christmas: weather, sights, and restaurant openings

Almiyo · 2025-09-29

Hello, We’re planning a trip to Crete for Christmas week 2025 and would love advice from travelers who’ve visited the island in winter. What should we expect in terms of weather? Which sights are best to prioritize—or avoid? Is it easy to find restaurants open? Obviously, we’re not expecting to hit the beach 😉 or do long hikes. We love traveling at a relaxed pace, soaking up the local atmosphere without covering too many kilometers by car. Thanks in advance to anyone who can share tips! Best regards,

Hi Marie,

I visited Crete during the holiday season quite some time ago. It was as a backpacker on a bike. Here are a few of my memories, with all due reservations 😊

The weather should still be pretty similar. I experienced extremes on that front. The rainstorms were tough to handle, but there were also some really beautiful days. A little snow in the higher elevations in the center of the island—nothing alarming for a Québécois 😉. You could climb some of the higher spots if you’re well-dressed and wearing good shoes. Walking along the beaches is really pleasant. In some places, they spoke German as a second language 🤓

At that time, the Cretans had a funny way of celebrating with firecrackers thrown toward tourists. It’s definitely surprising, no doubt about it. But don’t worry about it—now you know 😉. There were also motorcycle "rallies" in public squares by the younger crowd. I’m not sure if that’s still the case.

For food, there were plenty of restaurants open, even a few bars. But we were mostly among tourists. I got the feeling that the Cretans were a bit tired of tourists, but things have probably changed by now.

One piece of advice, if I may: find a nice place to stay so you can get to know the people you’ll be around. Then explore the island, which isn’t that big, by car and return to sleep in the same place. You’ll have a better chance of making connections. Also, don’t hesitate to talk to older people—they often speak French 😊

Anyway, don’t miss out on their excellent baklava. The Greek bread was pretty good too. Try the moussaka 😋, and a little Metaxa 5 ⭐ for a nightcap 😉. The coffee, I didn’t really like. And whatever you do, don’t call it Turkish coffee 🙈

The historical sites were a bit gloomy to visit, but hey, since you’re there. A visit to the Palace of Knossos is interesting.

Wishing you an amazing trip 👍

Jean 😊👋
