Aviophobia, how to overcome it?

Josscolombet · 2025-10-18

Hello fellow travelers,

After an engine failure in mid-2016 on a long-haul flight from BRISBANE to LYON, I developed a persistent aviophobia that I’m struggling to shake off. It’s becoming more and more of a hindrance.

Up until now, I’ve been using an avoidance strategy (for example, avoiding destinations that would require any other mode of transport than a car or train), but lately, it’s become really limiting.

I’m looking for a therapist—either in-person or via video call—who could help me get past this hurdle.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi,

Before traveling, I often watch TV documentaries about plane crashes. Convinced that it’s the end, I feel calm because I’ve got nothing left to lose. That’s what they call fighting fire with fire. 😛

Most importantly, remind yourself that statistically, you’re much more at risk as a cyclist or driver...

Hi Jojo

So if I understand correctly, you're a bit like me. Afraid of flying? 😉

No, not at all—except for that night when I dreamed the plane was crashing. The next day, I still got on the plane for Udon Thani to Chiang Mai. When we hit some turbulence, I was afraid my dream had been a premonition. Turns out, it was just one of those silly dreams.

On the other hand, I’m a little scared of women. My dad actually warned me about that, though ;)

On the other hand, I'm a little afraid of women.

That’s normal! They’re intimidating: they talk, they think, and sometimes they do both at the same time :P
