Questions about the route between Kosy Bay and Kruger

Hi there. We’ll be in South Africa at the end of February ’26 with a rental car—not a 4x4. What’s the best route between Kosy Bay and the southern part of Kruger Park? Is the Mozambique route via Maputo a good option? What are the formalities for crossing into Mozambique? Is the Kosy Bay area worth a detour? We’ll be entering Kruger from the south for 4 days. Any recommendations for routes/campsites? Lower Sabie, Satara? Do we really need to book accommodations in Kruger in February? And what about safaris? Thanks for your input! Franz

Unless I'm mistaken or there's been recent construction of a paved road, it's not possible to drive along the Mozambican coast to Maputo without a 4x4.

Generally, people with regular cars go through Swaziland (one night) or take a detour around it to the west.

For Kruger, accommodations need to be booked if you want a specific type of camp or lodging. They get reserved well in advance for the bush camps, which are nicer in my opinion.

Anyway, if you don’t care whether you’re at Berg-en-Dal or Lower Sabie, in a tent without amenities or a bungalow with a view (or vice versa), it’s less necessary to book ahead.

Personally, I recommend Biyamiti, Talamati, and Tamboti first. Otherwise, Berg-en-Dal and Olifants are good options. Satara is well located—less of a "factory" than Lower Sabie.

The Mlilwane park is nice for an overnight stay. (4x4 not necessary)

I don’t know Kosy Bay at all. It seems some areas do require a 4x4.

Be careful—you’ll need permission from the rental company to cross into this country, just like any other neighboring country in South Africa. (Some charge a fee, others don’t)

Hey, I was there this morning! Except in rare cases, no 4x4 needed. Personally, I always book ahead for Kruger— three days out = fully booked! I didn’t go via Mozambique. I took: Either Kosy Bay → Jozini → Golela border, but it’s not recommended right now, so Kosy Bay → head back down via Hluhluwe → then N2 toward Golela. Kosy Bay to Hluhluwe (the little town) – the road’s beautiful, but speed limits are strict and there are tons of speed cameras. Hluhluwe to Golela is an easy drive, but watch out for speed cameras. I stopped in Swaziland. Hluhluwe Mid-route: Cheap Scenic Rhinos everywhere! And I highly recommend the rhino game drive—it was magical. I won’t say more… PK and BED seemed pretty quiet. And BED for several days means you’ll keep seeing the same trails.

Hi there, Dusty roads in Swaziland, Kosi Bay is a long drive. Beaches and diving spots. Personally, I stayed 3 nights just to chill. Watch out—if it’s windy, it’s not very pleasant.

Personally, I’d recommend St Lucia for two nights instead. You can combine it well: a hippo and croc tour, plus a day at Isimangaliso with Cape Vidal beach and a game drive. Yesterday, we had an exceptional leopard sighting! Otherwise, you might spot a rhino and some elephants.
