Cape Town to KTP Route

Hi there, We're considering the following route: - Cape Town - West Coast National Park - Lambert's Bay - Springbok - Upington - KTP That’s about 1,250 km in total. We’ve already visited the West Coast National Park. Is covering such a distance to reach KTP (the main goal of our trip) really worth it—does it offer enough to justify the detour? Thanks for your input!

Hi Christine,

Cederberg, Tankwa, Augrabies?

I wrote a travel journal from Cape Town to the Kgalagadi. You can find it here.

On the way back, I went through Karoo National Park.

For the Cederberg, it's here.

I really like this south-to-north crossing, but it’s very desert-like—both in terms of landscapes and population density...

Thanks Agnès! I actually devoured all your African travel journals since I’ve been going to South Africa, but I’d forgotten you’d already done this route. I’ll dive back into them right away with pleasure! Thanks again, Christine

Hi there,

We really enjoyed this route heading north from Cape Town and ending at KTP. It was actually one of our trips in South Africa. To help you decide, you can check out the video for this route: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qlf4sFQRGPY&t=2503s

Highlights of this route: - West Coast National Park - Paternoster - Cederberg - Namaqualand - Augrabies Falls and KTP

Happy planning! Loïc

Hi there! There’s a route in one of the travel journals at the end of the first section that I love: CT WCNP (West Coast National Park) Paternoster Cederberg up to Mount Cedar Calvinia for a break The Tankwa welcomes you—go see Mrs. Attila Upington—meh, I should’ve skipped it and headed straight to Augrabies Springbok—I don’t know it

Watch out for peak season! The park can be very crowded, and it’s a shame because it’s so beautiful. They have accommodation deep inside the park… KTP (Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park) Book *way* in advance. The Botswana side isn’t as straightforward—wildlife isn’t as abundant. Supposedly lots of lions, but I didn’t see any. I arrived just before or just after the best time—gotta go back for round two! !
