CBD massage at Wat Pho: any risk of legal trouble?

Ludomero · 2025-11-05

Hi there, I'm looking for a way to unwind and planning a trip to Southeast Asia starting in Thailand with a stop in Bangkok. To shake off the stress, I'd love to treat myself to a massage at Wat Pho. But while researching, I read somewhere (on a temple page I can't find anymore) that they offer massages with CBD among other things. Hmm... why not, I'm up for almost anything to feel better. 😐

That said, I've also heard that recreational cannabis use is still illegal in Thailand. Even though CBD isn't exactly cannabis and it's supposedly "therapeutic," is there a risk of a "misunderstanding" with police waiting for me after my massage session, especially if my body smells a bit... distinctive? ðŸĪŠ

The most the police do when they have the time (!) is raid shops to check if they have a proper license, if they enforce the ban on smoking joints inside the store, and things like that.

Otherwise, it's an open bar. You can find smoking paraphernalia, cookies, and candies everywhere.

It’s worth noting that the new prime minister is the one who pushed for legalization a few years ago.

So, you can go ahead without worries.

For the rest, it's an open bar. You can find smoking heads, cookies, and candy galore. Needless to say, you can go there without a worry.

Oh wow, so that’s where we’re at…

Authorities have noticed the adverse effects of such permissiveness following a period of prohibition accompanied by severe repression. Let’s clarify that the problems often come from a minority of reckless and disrespectful individuals.

They’re now trying to make sure all this is a little less visible and less conspicuous.

Cannabis is legal.

It even surprises me they don’t offer a choice of sativa or indica for massages yet…

after my massage session when my body would be giving off a rather particular scent? ðŸĪŠ

Hi, hence my question: would you still get a full-body massage even if the masseur is a two-meter-tall guy who weighs over 100 kg?

You really have to look hard to find one like that in Thailand, huh? 😛

Good evening, yes, I agree. Compared to Westerners, Thais tend to be smaller in stature. But it’s best not to provoke them, just in case they’re skilled in Muay Thai or kickboxing. Anyway, I wouldn’t mess with those folks. 🙂

Thanks for this reply—it reassures me about there being no risk of police issues with this kind of massage. 🙂

when leaving my massage session with my body giving off a rather particular scent? ðŸĪŠ

hello, hence my question: would you still get a full-body massage even if the masseur is a two-meter-tall, 100+ kg giant?

I’m curious how my question about a potential risk related to the smell of CBD post-massage inspired this line of thought: are CBD massages reserved for the ultra-muscular? If that’s the case, I’d love to know why.

Otherwise, it’s true that the strength of the person giving the massage can be an issue—at least it has been for me with male physiotherapists I’ve seen, though none weighed over 100 kg.

For all I know, it might be some fantasy Mathews has, and of course I’ve got no reason to judge 😛
