How to get to and how long to stay in Janakpur?

Hi everyone, I’ll be in Nepal in January and would like to go to Janakpur, either from Sauraha or Kathmandu. Are there frequent buses during the day from these two places? Is it also possible to get an estimate of how long the trips take—I know it depends heavily on road conditions. Also, I’m unsure how many days to dedicate to exploring this city, which apparently has quite a few sights to see. Thanks in advance for your tips. Christiane

Hi Christiane, there are regular minibuses and jeeps from Kathmandu to Janakpur during the day. If you take a bus from Kathmandu via the new road (Kathmandu-Dhulikhel-Bardibas-Janakpur), it's 223 km, 6h30. There are also several flights from Kathmandu to Janakpur every day. If you're in Sauraha, you’ll need to go to Tandi to catch a bus—228 km, 5h30—but there are several throughout the day as well. Safe travels, adventure!
