Your thoughts on my Sri Lanka itinerary plan

hi everyone, I’m putting together an itinerary for Sri Lanka in September 2026, so I’m focusing on the east side of the island because of the monsoon on the west coast: Day 1 Kandy: botanical garden, fruit and vegetable market, traditional dance show Day 2 Kandy-Ella train Day 3-4 Kumana NP or Lunugamvehera Block 6+5 Day 5-6 Komari / Pottuvi lagoon safari Day 7 head up the east coast along the beaches to reach Wasgamuwa NP Day 8 Wasgamuwa NP early morning safari, then Polonnaruwa (temple and palace) Day 9-10 Sigiriya Lion’s Rock and Dambulla, cave temple Day 11-12 Wilpattu NP early morning safari, then late afternoon Day 13-14 Kalpitiya, snorkeling and chilling Day 15 return to Colombo Thanks for sharing your thoughts on whether this route is doable—we’ll be traveling with a driver-guide. Feel free to mention any great tips or good homestay experiences you’ve had, since we prefer those.

Your schedule is quite packed, even with a driver. In Sri Lanka, distances aren’t long, but the journeys take time.

You’re also visiting a lot of parks that are quite similar in terms of wildlife. I also think it’s a shame not to spend more time in the mountains of Sri Lanka. The tea region is unique and truly captures the essence of the island.

The east coast is stunning, especially Trincomalee, which has many kovils (Hindu temples). I think this region deserves more exploration. Personally, I’d skip Kalpitiya (unless you’re into kitesurfing) and stay in Trincomalee instead.

Hi there, your program has indeed been updated. Here are my thoughts:

One night in Sinharaja is enough.

Day 7 is ambitious, and I’d skip Uda Watekelle Forest—it’s honestly not that interesting. I used to go there when family visited and we’d run out of other things to do. It’s nice, but far from a must-see. There are way more fun things to do in Kandy, like the market or the Temple of the Tooth. I lived there for 5 years—trust me, the forest isn’t anything to write home about.

As for the driver, that’s a really low rate. Is he registered with the Tourism Board (the Sri Lankan tourism office)?
