Winter RV trip from New York to Quebec: tire question

Maggylb · 2025-12-08

Hi everyone, We’re leaving from New York and want to head to Quebec in January to visit friends. We’re traveling in our camper van with all-terrain tires and have chains. Is that possible? From what we’ve heard, winter tires are mandatory, which we get—otherwise, there are heavy fines. Can anyone give us some info? Thanks

Hey, If I understood correctly, you're traveling with a camper van registered in France. If it's indeed registered in France, you're apparently exempt from the winter tire requirement (Winter tire obligations | Government of Quebec).

To be absolutely sure, you can always contact the SAAQ (Contact us - SAAQ).

Have a great trip! In my opinion, you won't need chains if you have good all-terrain tires (and adjust your driving!)
