When booking your excursions through a local agency or an independent guide, you’ll always get better rates than if you go through your hotel or tour operator. The hotel-organized outings will be more "structured" (fixed schedules, larger groups, standardized itineraries). In any case, ask for prices and compare.

For currency exchange, you can get by buying some West African CFA francs at the airport. The rates aren’t as good as elsewhere, but it’s safe and quick. For the rest, you’ll find ATMs or exchange bureaus in all the tourist spots. Just make sure the bureau is official and displays the exchange rate.
