Route from De Rust to Port Elizabeth

Titikk · 2025-12-24

Hi everyone, I’m trying to finalize my 2-week itinerary for mid-February. We’ll have traveled from Port Elizabeth to George, stopping by Plettenberg and Knysna, and we’ll be around De Rust at the end. We want to take the return route to Port Elizabeth with an overnight stop since we don’t like driving for long hours. We’re torn between going through the Karoo with a stop in Steytlerville or taking the R62 via Joubertina and Kareedouw. Which option would you recommend, please? Just to clarify, we’ll have a compact car. Thanks for your help! Maeva

We're hesitating

Without hesitation via Willowmore and Steytlerville (R329, paved) A great spot for a stopover, but maybe a bit early for you: The Willow Historical Guesthouse.

Thanks for the reply. Google Maps says about 2h15 by road between De Rust and Streylerville, while ChatGPT says 3-4 hours. Who should I trust 😅?

You know who to trust 😄?

Me? ๐Ÿ˜‰

Pure driving time is a solid two hours. But, *cough* , in Africa we don’t wear watches—we’ve got time. In February, in the Karoo, the days are still long (over 12 hours) and the road is beautiful. Safe travels.

Haha okay, we’ll trust Voyajou 😄 So 2 hours is exactly the kind of trip we love—gives us plenty of time to enjoy the ride without stress. Thanks for your tips!

Sophie's Choice—the kind of place where you’d pop in for a carrot cake and leave with a car full of curios... I ended up taking... the R62. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I’m talking in the past tense because Sophie decided to close up shop two years ago.
